Point-of-Load Converter provides all-in-one power solution.

Press Release Summary:

Dual-output, non-isolated, point-of-load (POL) converter for DDR (double data rate) memory, DDR12, enables 2.5 V VDDQ supply for DDR logic and 1.25 V DDR termination voltage (VTT) to be derived from single module. Unit employs synchronous rectification techniques and has 85% conversion efficiency when operated at half-load or greater. The 2.5 V VDDQ output delivers up to 25 A, and 1.25 V VTT output delivers up to 8 A for use with DDR-SDRAM devices.

Artesyn Launches Industry's First Point-Of-Load Converter Specialized for Dual-Voltage Sink/Source Requirements of DDR-SDRAM

o single compact module provides cost-saving, all-in-one power
solution for DDR-SDRAM
o generates 25A@2.5V for VDDQ supply and 8A@1.25V for VTT termination

Artesyn Technologies has launched the industry's first dual-output non-isolated point-of-load (POL) converter for DDR (double data rate) memory. Known as the DDR12, this special-purpose POL converter is specifically designed to provide an all-in-one power solution for DDR memory and associated control logic. Until now, electronics designers have been forced to use two POL converters or complex circuitry based on discrete components, to meet the power needs of DDR memory. The new DDR12 dual-output POL converter offers a particularly cost-effective alternative to both these approaches, by enabling both
the 2.5V VDDQ supply for the DDR logic and the 1.25V DDR termination voltage (VTT) to be derived from a single, compact module. It is estimated that this dual-output POL will allow designers to reduce implementation costs by as much as 40%.

The DDR12 is the latest in a new generation of technologically
advanced products that Artesyn is developing for the rapidly-expanding non-isolated point-of-load converter market. It employs leading-edge synchronous rectification techniques and has a high conversion efficiency - typically 85% - when operated at half-load or greater.

The 2.5V VDDQ output can deliver up to 25A, while the 1.25V VTT output can deliver up to 8A; both voltages are trimmable from 90% to 110% of their nominal value. Suitable for use with all DDR-SDRAM (synchronous dynamic random access memory) devices, the DDR12 converter is packaged as a small footprint, vertically-oriented module suitable for use in 1U-high rack-mount applications. Typically, these would include workstations, servers and communications infrastructure equipment, as well as general-purpose computing and industrial applications.

Designed for operation from a nominal 12V supply rail, the DDR12
dual-output POL converter features a wide input range that is capable of accommodating any voltage from 10.8 to 13.2VDC. The 2.5V VDDQ output offers remote sense capabilities, has a fast 8A/µs transient response, and is fully protected against over-voltage conditions.

Both outputs feature over-current protection, and the converter also offers remote on/off facilities and a 'power good' output signal as standard.

DDR12 POL converters employ an open-frame, single-board construction to minimize cost and weight, and to simplify thermal management. Designed for semi-automated assembly, the converters make extensive use of SMT components, and feature single-in-line connections intended for through-hole board mounting. The vertically-oriented package has an above-board height of just 1.2 inches and a small footprint of 3.0 x 0.51 inches, making it easy to accommodate on tightly-packed PCBs.

Artesyn's DDR12 dual-output POL converters have an operational
temperature range of 0sC to 80sC, with de-rating. They carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 (TÃœV Product Service) and UL/cUL60950.

Pricing for 10,000-piece quantities is $16.75 US, and the standard lead time is stock to 6-8 weeks.
