PoE Midspans provide 95 W per port.

Press Release Summary:

Compliant with UL SELV and LPS requirements, Mega Models POE240U-2MP and POE576U-4MP are 2- and 4-port Power-over-Ethernet midspans with total output power of 180 and 380 W, respectively. Units provide IEEE 802.3 detection and disconnect, as well as pre-standard IEEE802.3at classification. Both have AC input voltage of 90-264 Vac and operating temperature of 0-40°C. Applications include computer workstations, LCD display panels, and wireless access point arrays.

PhihongUSA Debuts Mega PoE Midspans Providing 95w Per Port

FREMONT, Calif. - (May 19, 2009) - PhihongUSA, a global leader in Power-over-
Ethernet solutions, has developed a Power-over-Ethernet midspan product line that offers the highest power per port available on the market. Currently available in 2- and 4-port versions, the POE240U-2MP and POE576U-4MP Gigabit-compatible Mega PoE midspans provide up to 95W of power per port, more than any other midspan or PoE-enabled switch, making them ideal for high-power applications such as computer workstations, LCD display panels, and wireless access point (WAP) arrays. Other emerging applications, including emergency lighting, outdoor security cameras and magnetic locks, and even medical monitoring, are expected to benefit from the device's ability to deliver data and centralized backup power while reducing product
installation costs.

"Even before the PoE Plus standard is approved, users are demanding significantly more
than 30W of power per port," said Keith Hopwood, vice president of marketing, PhihongUSA.

"This advanced midspan technology provides full-power on every port and is a more costeffective solution for expanding your network's capability because it saves thousands of dollars in cost and time when compared to getting an electrician to install power where it is needed."

Like all PhihongUSA midspans, the new Mega PoE products provide IEEE 802.3
detection and disconnect, as well as pre-standard IEEE802.3at classification. The midspans also offer over-voltage, over-current, and short-circuit protection.

The POE240U-2MP has an AC input voltage range of 90 to 264VAC. The unit's total
output power is 180Watts, and it operates in a temperature range of 0° to 40° C.
The POE576U-4MP also has an AC input voltage range of 90 to 264VAC. The unit's total
output power is 380Watts, and it operates in a temperature range of 0° to 40° C.

Mega PoE products provide the same level of safety as lower-power PoE products. All
Mega PoE products follow the IEEE802.3 design concept and detect whether a Mega PoE device is attached prior to delivering power. Additionally, the power is constantly monitored to be within the required limits in order to stay connected. Furthermore, the output of all Mega PoE products is compliant with UL SELV (Safety Extra-Low Voltage) and LPS (Limited Power Source) requirements, which ensures that they are safe to handle.

Mega PoE products also utilize the same Ethernet wiring, standard Cat5 cabling and above, as lower-power PoE products. The IEEE802.3 PoE standard limits were determined by testing the rise in the wire temperature as they transferred data through a 168-cable bundle buried in conduit, in which all conductors carried a limited 60W current. The test proved that, even with 60W per cable in all conductors, the wire temperature rose less than 10°C in the bundle's center conductor and maintained a temperature hundreds of degrees lower than those that present fire hazards. Subsequent tests proved that when the cable temperatures exceeded 60° C, the cable became soft and lost its data transferring properties. However, the majority of higher-power applications utilize dedicated data cables, negating any temperature concern and guaranteeing the
safe and consistent operation of connected Mega PoE devices; and, for those that do not, smaller cable bundle sizes should be used.

Midspans that offer full power per port are the best choice for future-proofing a network, because no matter what end device is added-more phones with more functionality, security cameras with advanced functionality, PC workstations-the required power is available. As more devices are supported by the increased standards such as IEEE 802.3at and beyond, midspans give users increased options, flexibility, and cost savings.
