New Lightweight POP ProSet 3400 Rivet Tool

New lightweight POP® ProSet® 3400 rivet tool delivers more rivet setting power for less money.

The world leader in blind rivet technology has expanded its tool product line to include the next generation of lightweight high powered rivet tools featuring a unique ergonomic design and the ability to set all 4, 5, 6 and 8-size rivets, including high strength and stainless steel.

(Shelton, Connecticut) Emhart Teknologies has announced the launch of the new POP® ProSet® 3400 Rivet Tool. Designed specifically to set all size 4, 5, 6 and 8-size blind rivets, including high strength and stainless steel, this new tool delivers 4,148 lbs. (18.5 kN) of pulling power with a force-to-weight ratio of 990 lbf/lb (9.74 kN/kg).

According to the Global POP® Tools Product Manager, Joaquin Sanchez, "The ProSet® 3400 rivet tool delivers the highest pulling force of any tool in its class. Dollar for dollar, there is no better high capacity rivet tool of its kind on the market today anywhere in the world."

The 3400 rivet tool is the latest member of the ProSet® power rivet tool family. Its release continues Emhart Teknologies' effort to provide high performance lightweight and ergonomic tools. The 3400 MCS model, weighs only 4.41 lbs (2.0 kg) and the non-MCS model weighs 4.19 lbs (1.9 kg) yet it can set any rivet from 1/8" through ¼" diameter. The tool measures 12.17 inches (309 mm) long and 12.44 inches (316 mm) high with a stroke of 1.02 inches (26 mm). Air consumption is minimal, requiring only 2.83 cu. ft. (80 cu. liters) per rivet set. According to Mr. Sanchez, "If you look at the specs, the 3400 is a very compact lightweight tool for the amount of force it delivers, especially compared to competitive tools."

Considering its ergonomics, the new tool features a strong yet lightweight polymer handle, a comfortable two-finger, low-activation-force trigger, a rounded grip and an adjustable air exhaust to keep cold air away from the tool user.

It is also rich in performance features, including a quick-disconnect nose housing and jaw case, excellent for easy jaw cleaning and front end maintenance. The 3400 has a quick-disconnect MCS cup, which safely captures spent mandrels for easy disposal. The MCS feature provides additional safety in that the vacuum shuts off when the cup is removed. The rugged aluminum casing is designed to prevent damage and will enhance the life of the tool. Further features include the left or right, 90° swivel air fitting which ensures the tool can be adapted to virtually any workstation configuration, the "on/off" switch on the fitting enables to minimize air consumption and a spring return operation ensures reliable fast setting cycles with low vibration/shock performance for operator comfort.

Mr. Sanchez noted, "The ProSet® 3400 is also compatible with all Emhart Teknologies automation technologies including the POP® Rivet Presenter (RP), POP® MCS5000 Remote Mandrel Collection System and POP® Specialty Heads. Coming in 2009, we will expand compatibility to include the POP® SmartSet® integrated process monitoring system."

State-of-the-art SmartSet® process monitoring "reads" the force/time curve of installing POP® blind rivets. The controller counts correct installations and signals through a light or sound warning system if an operator or application default error is detected. Correct installation and fault occurrence data can be uploaded or automatically fed into a computer system for analysis. Requiring only a ¼ inch airline and a single shielded wire to connect the tool to the controller, the SmartSet upgrade will make the tool useful in applications where process monitoring is critical.

Mr. Sanchez adds, "The new ProSet® is the latest development in our continuous improvement strategy to create lightweight, powerful rivet tools that are easy and quick to maintain. It represents a major advance in rivet tool design and functionality which will translate into longer life and lower rivet setting costs for our customers, no matter what material or size rivet they are using."
