New Starter Kit From Fujitsu Microelectronics Supports 32-bit RISC-based MCUs for Industrial Motor Control Applications

Equipped with source code, power supply adapter, the kit enables rapid set-up and deployment

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 24 -- Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) today introduced a new motor control starter kit equipped with source code and a power-supply adapter to support development with the MB91F479, a high-performance, 32-bit RISC microcontroller for industrial motor control applications.

The new kit is ideal for driving a 3-phase brushless DC motor (BLDC) or permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) found in washing machines, air conditioners, refrigerators, and other consumer white goods. The kit simplifies the evaluation and implementation of the MB91F479, reducing design cycle time and enabling faster time-to-market.

The "ready-to-go" kit saves initial hardware and software set-up time, and can run quickly after starting up. The kit's modular, two-board design includes an inverter board and an MCU board with preloaded demonstration software, which is different from the BLDC motor assembly.

Fully tested software libraries are optimized for real-time execution for PMSM and BLDC motors. The libraries support hall sensor methods and the advanced sensor-less back-EMF algorithm for BLDC motor control, and FOC sensor-less control capabilities for PMSM motor control. Using these libraries, the user can rapidly evaluate a solution ranging from traditional sensor-based techniques to advanced FOC controls.

Unlike other products in the market, the Fujitsu kit provides a power supply adapter, which eliminates the need for bulky lab power supplies. The physical design of these boards can be reused for other target applications, complemented by available OrCAD source files and a complete BOM for component reference. The entire circuit is built on an affordable two-layer printed circuit board.

The new kit can drive a motor up to 5W, so users can evaluate real-world motor control applications without developing their own hardware. Push-button switches on the MCU board allow users to easily monitor the motor performance via an RS232 connection to a PC terminal.

The kit can run as a plug-and-play demonstration or as an "out-of-the-box" solution, with the included BLDC motor in sensor/sensor-less mode or with a PMSM motor in sensor-less control. Three ready-to-run speed-control demos (PMSM and BLDC) allow users to evaluate the motor control, system tuning, and different speed reference profiles quickly and efficiently.

The MB91F479 MCU is a powerful new member of the Fujitsu 32-bit motor control family, which incorporates essential motor control peripherals like multi-function timers and dead timers for generating the three-phase PWM waveform that drives and controls motors. A uDSP feature in the MB91F479 reduces the CPU overload and enhances its response time, an especially important feature for sensor-less motor-control applications that require intensive CPU activity.

"This excellent new design kit can be used quickly with our high-performance, RISC-based MB91F79 to develop user-owned applications. The easy-to-use and modifiable software library for PMSM and BLDC motors can significantly save users development time and effort in algorithmic development," said Dean Chang, senior product marketing manager, Fujitsu Microelectronics America.

Pricing and Availability

The new motor control starter kit is available now at $650 each.
