Original Press Release:

PC-Based Automation Six Times More Efficient Than Before

Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) has increased significantly the efficiency of its real-time-capable software PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) for PC-based Automation. With new version Simatic WinAC RTX 2005, the PC's CPU load is reduced to around one sixth, making it possible to integrate very powerful controllers in compact PCs or to solve not only control tasks but also a wide variety of sophisticated tasks on the same PC. The combination of software PLC, Windows XP Embedded, and the compact and robust Simatic Microbox PC 420, which uses neither a fan nor a hard disk, ensures a high level of system availability.

Using WinAC RTX 2005, an Ethernet interface can be operated independently of Windows to increase the availability of the automation solution. All communication with other Simatic controllers is reliably handled over this interface. WinAC RTX 2005 supports the integrated Profibus and Ethernet interfaces on the Simatic PC, making it possible to save on slots, set up cost-effective systems, and operate as many as four Profibus lines with a maximum of 500 slaves.

WinAC RTX 2005 is configured and programmed with Step 7, either on the same PC or over Ethernet and Profibus - and all from any point in the network. WinAC RTX 2005 is program-compatible with Simatic S7-400 controllers. With the Open Development Kit (ODK), Windows and C/C++ applications as well as PC cards and I/O can be easily integrated in order to adapt the PC-based solution to the individual tasks. July 2005 is planned as delivery date for Simatic WinAC RTX 2005.
