Plastics Professionals Visit NPE in Orlando

Negri Bossi and Sacmi fly to Florida to present their latest range of products, from the revolutionary EOS to the innovative CHS vision system used to eliminate closing defects.

Npe, the most important exhibition in the world for the plastics industry, will take place from April 1 to 5 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. This occasion is not to be missed by the Sacmi Group, with its several decades of experience in the sector and important innovations launched in the market in 2011.

Of all these innovations, Negri Bossi's EOS, an absolute novelty presented last Autumn in Birmingham, Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Russia and India, obtained important acknowledgements. Offered in a wide range from 50 to 120 tons, EOS is characterized for its extreme compactness, which can be noticed instantly. One must simply consider that the dimensions of the 80-90 ton versions were reduced from the 5 meters of the previous version to current 3.5 meters. The advantages don't stop here: compared to the traditional Negri Bossi line, which was already very advanced in the sector, EOS not only provides classic toggle clamping, but also allows the lubrication system in the mold area to be eliminated thanks to its innovative 2-plate clamping system that is also responsible for its compact dimensions. This feature has met with "appreciation" by the operators in the food and biomedical sector: not by chance, the model displayed at NPE will be equipped with a mold for producing medical items (butterfly I.V. catheters). This is a "100% new" machine that dedicates particular attention to consumption, along with the innovative "self-tuning" control system for reducing molding problems.

From the EOS jewel one passes to the consolidated hybrid JANUS series, another top of the line product on display at the exhibition, which is characterized by "robotic" integration thanks to Sytrama, a recent Negri Bossi acquisition that has allowed the company to propose integrated solutions for industrial automation. The lateral Sytrama IML robot will be offered with the press. This robot was specifically designed to be integrated into this type of press, which uses an "in mold labeling" article application system. In essence, the robot picks up labels and inserts them into the press cavity, starting the "overmolding" process. This results in a container with an "incorporated" label, the kind typically used on food tubs. This application will be shown at the exhibition, but it may also be used in the glaze sector and cosmetic field. This represents a state of the art solution that comes together with the general advantages of the JANUS series regarding energy saving. It also demonstrates Negri Bossi as a company that is always growing technologically through its investments in new machines, always pointing towards industrial synergies within the Group, in order to propose itself to the market as a complete partner for automated molding.

Another awaited product at the exhibition is the CANBIO hydraulic press, which is held in high regard by the market for its productivity and reliability in all conditions of use. Finally, the full electric, completely renovated series, with its top of the line, VESTA, by Negri Bossi, could not be missed. The 220 ton model shown at the exhibition will be presented with a 48-cavity mold for syringe production. Cleanliness, precision and energy saving are the features of this product line that make it ideal for the medical sector.

Switching over from Negri Bossi to Sacmi, this company has decided to present the best if its offer of presses and vision systems for the closure sector. The highly acclaimed CCM48SB is characterized by its evolution, according to the lean project management principles, from the previous CCM48SA model, a machine with excellent production performance, producing up to 1,600 caps per minute thanks to significantly reduced cycle times, and extremely reduced energy consumption. The high cavity output makes this device the ideal solution for light single-piece cap production for water (molding diameters up to 33 mm), as well as making it a versatile solution for single and double piece caps for CSD (Carbonated Soft Drinks).

The consistent energy savings is guaranteed by CCM (continuous compressing molding) technology, which allowed Sacmi to educate others in the closure industry worldwide. In fact, CCM consumption is equal to 0.75 kWh/kg at its maximum production speed, which is 25% less than the best values found for injection technology. These advantages are coupled with exit defects reduced to a minimum, in the case of the CCM presented at Npe, thanks to the integrated CVS 052 (CVS 3000) vision system produced by Sacmi for real time control of the caps integrated on the CCM exit belt.

Sacmi continues to invest in vision systems with the CHS 003 "stand-alone" system that will be presented in Orlando. This system controls plastic and aluminum screw caps. A 3-camera system, which can be increased to four, guarantees complete control of the processed piece through the use of two vacuum belts. The two sides are controlled first by the internal cameras and then the outside by the other color camera that "explodes" the cap and checks the surface condition point by point, even in decorated versions. This revolutionary machine can inspect up to 120,000 pieces per hour.

There are several highly sophisticated systems that can be integrated into the basic version of this CHS. For example, the 4-camera version, the CVS 360, provides total control of lateral wall cap development, including the search for any burrs on the cap jumpers with injection-molded safety bands. It addition, it provides "Cavity Recognition" which can identify and read the number of cavities molded in the caps using an illuminator and dedicated software. This allows defect statistics to be made. Then, it can proceed to the relative rejects.

Finally, the "Spark Tester" can identify micro-holes or cracks that cannot be easily identified with traditional optic systems on the base of the "electric rigidity" principle of plastic caps. Whether the base or multi-accessorized version, the CHS family distinguishes itself for its high modularity and easy integration into existing lines to execute sample checks directly on the line or execute post-checks on batches to identify any products that do not conform to the required standards.

From the advantages of continuous compression molding, then, to those offered for the other stages of the industrial beverage process: this is where SBF stretch blow molders - highly reliable and efficient machines that allow individual customers to give the bottles their characteristic shape - come into play.

The Sacmi SBF range of rotary stretch blow molding machines, featuring from 6 to 24 blow molding stations, represents high-end equipment able to produce more than 64,000 bottles per hour in the standard half-liter format.

The distinguishing characteristic of Sacmi SBF machines, and an important advantage too, is the possibility to install on each machine of the range a mould with 1 cavity for a large bottle (up to 3 liters) or with 2 for a small one (up to 600 ml). and switch between them with the greatest ease and speed. In this way, it is possible to process over 2700 small bottles per hour per station, making full use of the performance and output capacity of any filling machine or line to which it might be connected.

In the world of PET preforms, Sacmi is today the only market leader able to propose two alternative technologies - injection and compression.

Plant flexibility with fast format changeover, ergonomic engineering solutions, energy savings, a compact footprint, worldwide sales and an extensive after-sales network - all these goals are achieved with the new IPS Injection Preform Systems.
