New Igus Iglide R Plastic Bearings Replace Traditional Bronze Bearings at an Affordable Price

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - February 23, 2004 - igus® Inc. today introduced a new plastic plain bearing, iglide® R, to replace traditional bronze bearings in many applications. Iglide R is an affordable, maintenance-free alternative to oil-dependent sintered bearings. Iglide R, like all iglide plastic bearings, requires no lubrication, is oil-free and will not corrode.

Iglide R is resistant to dirt, dust and UV rays, as well as quiet and environmentally safe, making it ideal for agricultural and outdoor applications. Commercial mowers and industrial golf course equipment will benefit from its contamination-free properties.

Iglide R is virtually maintenance-free, incurring no additional costs beyond initial purchase price. Most bronze bearings require regular maintenance, which can significantly increase cost over time. Unlike Iglide R, bronze bearings require lubrication such as oil, which can harm the environment. Furthermore, if the do not operate properly they will not lubricate, thereby decreasing the lifespan of the bearing or damaging the machine.

The benefits of using iglide R plastic bearings over bronze bearings include:

o self lubrication and maintenance-free operation lead to lower costs over time;

o plastic-based construction eliminates corrosion and delivers better vibration dampening;

o plastic can handle edge loading better than bronze; and

o plastic can support any type of movement: rotary, oscillating or linear.

The iglide suite of plastic bearings offers customers the choice of more than 6,000 imperial and metric bearing sizes from stock. Iglide plastic bearings are a convenient, cost-effective alternative to bronze, metal-backed and custom injection-molded bearings. All iglide bearings are self-lubricating and maintenance-free. At start-up, these high-performance bearings transfer material to the shaft and coat it with low-friction material. The bearing will then run for its predetermined life expectancy without any further intervention.
