Emerson Enhances Ovation(TM) Expert Control System for Improved Operator Experience, Effectiveness and Productivity

Latest release features more intuitive operator interface, graphics building tools and field device configuration/troubleshooting environment

PITTSBURGH - Emerson Process Management has released the latest version of its industry-leading Ovation(TM) expert control system, widely used to control power generation and water/wastewater treatment facilities around the globe. The enhanced system features an improved operator interface, field device configuration/troubleshooting environment and graphics building tools. These enhancements translate into greater operator efficiency and productivity, and minimize the risk of human error. This is particularly relevant today, as older workers retire, leaving fewer and less-experienced operators running complex power generation and water/wastewater facilities.

Factoring in how people actually work with technology during the design stage of a product optimizes the user's experience and interaction with it. From a control systems perspective, Emerson has identified the information needed most by operators and redesigned the Ovation interface accordingly, so that information is delivered in a more intuitive, customizable and easy-to-use format.

Ovation's redesigned operator interface features task-based ribbon toolbars that offer functionality based on the context in which the user is working. With the new operator interface, key functions are front and center; they no longer need to be accessed via separate properties selection windows, enabling operators to more easily get to the information they need when they need it.

This latest Ovation release also allows operators to customize and save individual workspace settings, enabling them to view, for example, point information and alarms according to their individual preferences. Giving operators the opportunity to work in a familiar environment allows them to focus on the most important data, streamlining the decision-making process. Additionally, the enhanced Ovation Graphics Builder tools now incorporate new color management features, shape animation and application program wizards, among other improvements.

The new release of the Ovation system also features an improved configuration and troubleshooting environment for HART and Foundation(TM) fieldbus devices. Configuration tools are now consolidated into the Ovation Developers Studio, Emerson's standard suite of engineering tools, so that everything needed to configure and commission devices is available in one convenient location. In addition, the Ovation Developers Studio now incorporates AMS Suite: Intelligent Device Manager v11, Emerson's predictive maintenance software. AMS Device Manager features Device Dashboards - intuitively designed interfaces that provide, in one glance, a clear view of everything users need to evaluate, diagnose and configure a field device. Each has embedded expert guidance to streamline the most important and frequent tasks performed by plant operations, engineering and maintenance personnel.

"Our top priority is helping our customers operate their plants safely, reliably and efficiently. By improving the usability of the Ovation system we are doing just that," said Steve Schilling, vice president of technology at Emerson Process Management's Power & Water Solutions division. According to Schilling, this latest release of the Ovation system demonstrates how Emerson is not just investing in technology itself, but is also investing in the design of how technology is used, making it easier for customers to extract value from their investment.

"We are ensuring operators are getting the right information at the right time, and are not distracted by extraneous data," continued Schilling, who also notes that the improvements embedded into the latest Ovation release are aligned with the approach advocated by Emerson's Human Centered Design Institute, which is affiliated with Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. "Doing so makes them more efficient and productive while helping to minimize human error, which is so imperative for maintaining the reliability of our electrical and water infrastructure."
