PIV Drives: Twin Screw Extruder Drives for High Performance Compounder Made by Coperion Werner & Pfleiderer

PIV Drives Provides Double Toothed Rack And Pinion Drives for All-Electric Injection Moulding Machines

The POSIRACK rack and pinion drives of PIV Drives (Bad Homburg, Germany), a Brevini Power Transmission company, are used for mould locking in all-electric injection moulding machines. These drives reduce energy consumption drastically while considerably increasing productivity.

Milacron - one of the world's leading manufacturers of all-electric injection moulding machines - uses POSIRACK rack and pinion drives for mould locking in its Powerline all-electric injection moulding machines: energy consumption is reduced by 50 to 60 percent compared to conventional applications with hydraulic drives, while neither speed nor any other operational feature is affected.

Product development has progressed similarly in the area of the plastic producing industry as it has in machine tool manufacturing. To ensure this progress in the area of plastic processing machines, there is an increased use of more powerful components for power transmission, among others drives that are used in a variety of machines like extruder drives, calenders, mixers, compounders, injection moulding machines.

PIV Drives has been a reliable partner for internationally renowned companies in all the above-mentioned areas for many years now and provides these companies with drive solutions as well as standardized and customized drives. The fact that PIV products are developed and manufactured with accuracy and competence ensures that they fulfill the requirements for all operational features and provide for the sustained productivity of the installations to maximum satisfaction.

In other words, PIV Drives provides for relevant components for the functionality of machines and applications that affect the profitability for the benefit of the consumer. These components make it possible to create a considerable added value for the manufacturers of the machines.

With all-electric injection moulding machines, the dynamics are crucial - in the sense of the ability of each component to provide for the necessary speed of the production cycles - since it is these dynamics that define the production potential. This also applies to the function of mould locking: the higher the performance gets, the more it is necessary to use drives that are absolutely reliable and that guarantee a high and sustained constant efficiency. It is because of their advantages that POSIRACK rack and pinion drives are used: with a rack force of 15 to 450 kN (depending on the installation size) they ensure, due to the electric navigation, a speed of more then 2.000 mm/s. These figures refer to the rack. A toggle system multiplies the power and reduces the above-mentioned speed to the effective value of the movement of the mould closing form.

The POSIRACK drives are characteristic for their double toothed rack and pinion drives. This solution in combination with the precision gear wheels makes it possible to construct the drives in a compact design so that they fit in easily in the limited installation space of the machines. In general, the servo motor for the drive is flanged. If a customers wishes, special engine shafts can be manufactured, which at the same time function as the input shaft of the drive.

As opposed to the alternative solution for the electrical mould locking (with the help of ball screws) one might consider the POSIRACK drives solution when it comes to dynamics, speed, efficiency and in particular reliability as well as performance stability in the long run. The higher purchasing costs of the components will be fully compensated for by their superior reliability and longevity, taking into consideration the "cost of the life cycle".

Since 1994 PIV DRIVES develops and provides - in close cooperation with clients -drive solutions for mould locking, the pressing of the nozzles, plastification and injecting: ever since, thousands of drives are being used world wide to the full satisfaction of the users.

Milacron relies on the POSIRACK series because POSIRACK has obvious advantages for the use in all-electric injection moulding machines: Higher cycle speed and an unbeatable repeatability of the injection moulding processes reduce costs and enhance the quality of the formed parts. In this context, the actual savings in energy consumption of 50 to 60 percent compared to a hydraulic installation - at the same force - are crucial. These savings are due to the all-electric drive.

Milacron uses these drives for machines with a locking force of 30 to 1.125 tons and ensures, due to the high speed (for example a rack speed of 330 mm/s with a machine with a locking force of 1.125 tons), a very low value for the duration of the mould locking.

Nowadays, MILACRON uses several drives from PIV Drives all around the world. On their injection moulding machines more than a thousand are double toothed rack and pinion drives. Other PIV Drives products are used as: parallel axis gearboxes for plastification, special purpose right angle gearboxes for nozzle pressing, crank drives for injecting. The mutual contentment of both companies is the basis of the continuation of the long and productive cooperation between PIV Drives and MILACRON and for the continuous improvement of their products.

PIV Drives has a long-standing track record in the area of plastic and rubber technology. Since 1980 the company has been producing drive solutions for the complete range of plastic and rubber processing. Apart from a thousand double toothed rack and pinion drives (POSIRACK series) for mould locking in all-electric injection moulding machines, more than 6000 PIV Drives extruder gear boxes are used all around the world: twin screw extruder drives from the POSITWIN series and single screw extruder drives from the POSIREX series (torque up to 600 000 Nm).
