Pirelli Demos First Ever Tunable DWDM XFP at OFC/NFOEC 2007

Milan, Italy - 26 March 2007 - Pirelli Broadband Solutions, the broadband access and photonics company within the Pirelli Group, today announced that it will demonstrate the first tunable DWDM XFP for 10 GB/s applications at the Optical Fiber Communication/ National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) in Aneheim, Calif., on March 27, 2007.

Visitors to the Pirelli booth (no. 3011) will see demonstrated for the first time ever, a tunable DWDM XFP. Adding tunability to an XFP form factor provide carriers with a module that is 10 times smaller and consumes four times less power than standard tunable modules. For carriers this translates into the same high-quality performance but with greater flexibility and significant cost reductions for their transport optical equipment. Savings will come in the form of reductions in spares inventory and the ability to upgrade, repair and maintain networks in less time. Pirelli's tunable XFP are offered in high output power or high-dispersion tolerant formats, and are full compliant with the XFP multi-source agreement.

"Pirelli has developed a complete product portfolio of tunable and pluggable solutions that address the system and end-user needs. Merging these two features was the natural next step," said Pierluigi Franco, SVP Marketing and Product Management for Pirelli Broadband Solutions.

"Feedback from the marketplace was pointing us in this direction and thus, bringing tunability to an XFP is not only an impressive milestone for us but also for the industry. We have entered the next frontier of optics for transport networks."

1. Pirelli will also demo of a 200-Km reach DWDM XFP transceiver and an MSA 300-pin duo-binary transponder working together through 200-Km of standard single mode fiber without using dispersion compensation units. The demo will include two signal generators, showing standard signal quality between Pirelli's XFP and its MSA 300-pin transponder over 200-Km fiber. Until today, these modules were not interoperable and required additional equipment to allow signal transmission.
2. The XFP family includes an extensive portfolio of modules featuring high output power and a wide range of dispersion tolerance levels for longer distances, 80 to 200 km+. This range allows customers to optimize the cost-performance ratio across different networks, including metro and regional.
3. Other products on display in the Pirelli booth will include:Lyte WDM Metro Access and Metro Core System, a low-cost, expandable CWDM platform; Pirelli Dynamically Tunable Laser (DTL), an external cavity laser in a standard butterfly package designed for DWDM optical network systems; Pirelli ITLA, a compact module with built-in tunable laser and control electronics; Pirelli High Power DWDM XFP16; Pirelli MSA 300PIN NRZ transponder module.
