Pirelli Broadband Solutions Launches New Dual-Mode GSM-Wi-Fi Handsets at C5 2007

Pirelli to demonstrate its complete end-to-end portfolio - from metro access to CPE

Milan, Italy - 20 March 2007 - Pirelli Broadband Solutions, the broadband access and photonics company within the Pirelli Group, today announced that it will launch its new range of dual-mode GSM-WiFi handsets at the C5 World Forum next week. Pirelli will also bring a live demonstration of its complete end-to-end portfolio to the show, taking place at Fiera Milano Congressi, Milan, between 27-28 March 2007.

Visitors to the Pirelli stand (no. 4028) will see for the first time the company's design concepts for a new range of dual-mode handsets. The launch of the new line of dual-mode devices will feature the Discus(TM) Dual Mode Phone DP-M30, a stylish multimedia clamshell with Bluetooth capabilities and front cover hotkeys for the handset's MP3 player.

Pirelli will also unveil Discus(TM) DuMan Remote Management Platform, a new scalable platform for service distribution, upgrades and monitoring via over the air provisioning (OTAP). With DuMan, telecom operators can reduce time-to-market and lower OPEX through savings in customer support costs.

"Our first dual-mode handset has proved extremely popular across Europe since its launch in 2006. This new family of GSM-Wi-Fi handsets will build on that success and will take dual-mode mobile communications to the next level," said Mauro Sacchetto, CEO at Pirelli Broadband Solutions. "The technology behind our dual-mode offering is the result of more than five years' R&D and large-scale deployments of VoIP service-oriented devices."

With "dual-mode" handsets, users can make regular mobile phone calls using a SIM card or call via the internet with an xDSL Wi-Fi gateway.

This solution enables mobile phone features through a fixed-broadband connection, which provides greater bandwidth and cost savings. Pirelli dual-mode devices also provide automatic provisioning and software upgrade features that allow the operator to simplify the user's experience and lower the costs related to service activation and management. The Discus(TM) Dual-Mode Phone DP-L10, Pirelli's pioneering dual-mode device with camera, SMS, MMS, WAP, and e-mail, is available online and through service providers in Italy, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Pirelli's end-to-end demo will include: the company's Metro and Access Network solution, a low-cost expandable CWDM platform; a Remote Management Platform, offering automatic provisioning for multi-vendor

TR-069 based CPE; a family of smart card-equipped access gateways for VoIP, Wi-Fi, ADSL 2/2+, and VDSL 2 services; a broad portfolio of set-top boxes, including high-definition, hybrid decoders for IPTV and DTT, with DVR capabilities; and SIP-based, GSM/GPRS-Wi-Fi dual-mode handsets.

Pirelli is demonstrating its industry-leading expertise by chairing two sessions at the Forum: Eugenio Iannone, senior vice president, Application Engineering and Market Validation, will lead a workshop entitled Metro Networks in the Broadband Era; and Corrado Rocca, senior vice president, Product Marketing and Development, Access Products, will chair a session called User-oriented home gateways and services.
