BASF Introduces a New Synthetic Mica Effect Pigment for Cosmetics

Chione(TM) Snowfall White effect pigment provides clean, white pearlescent effect

FLORHAM PARK, NJ, May 11, 2009 - BASF today introduced the Chione(TM) Snowfall White effect pigment, based on its new generation of titanium dioxide-coated synthetic mica, at the New York Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) Suppliers' Day, May 12-13, 2009, at the New Jersey Conference and Expo Center, Edison, NJ.

Created by coating titanium dioxide onto a synthetic mica substrate, the pigment exhibits a very clean, white color due to the transparency of the substrate. The intermediate particle size provides a shimmery appearance.

Chione Snowfall White pigment is designed to help color cosmetics and personal care products achieve an elegant shimmery look and glossy luster.
The high purity of the pigment makes it especially desirable for lip and eye are applications, or in products where a clean, white pearlescent effect is desired.

"Chione pigment can be used alone, or in combination with other BASF cosmetic effect pigments to create new color spaces and/or effects," said Mike Kent, Global Strategic Marketing Manager, Cosmetic Effect Pigments.

"It expands our broad and innovative portfolio of pigments which offer sparkle, luster, color and dimensionality, by meeting a need in the clean, white pearlescent space for use in translucent or transparent applications as well as opaque products." Synthetic mica is transparent, and is free of natural impurities. This high purity, plus a soft, silky feel on the skin are additional benefits of Chione pigment. Inspired by the shimmering, pure whiteness of newly fallen snow, Chione pigment derives its name from the Greek goddess of snow.

BASF has also developed a method to show how effect pigments appear over a range of skin tones that mimic global skin appearances. BASF's global Cosmetic Effect Pigments Applications Laboratory in Ossining, NY developed a special type of color chip based on CIE L*a*b* standard color measurement system values of skin tones obtained from individuals with representative skin types. The backgrounds of the skin tone color chart represent white, light beige, dark beige, yellow-beige, light brown, dark brown, and black shades.
