Kistler Introduces PiezoStar® Triaxial IEPE Piezoelectric Accelerometer

with Center-Hole Mounting for Automotive NVH Investigations

Novi, Michigan, USA - Kistler (www.kistler.com), a worldwide supplier of precision sensors, systems and instrumentation for the dynamic measurement of pressure, force, torque and acceleration, has introduced the Type 8781A50, a PiezoStar® (IEPE-type) piezoelectric accelerometer with center hole mounting, expressly designed to provide vibration measurements across three orthogonal axes, in support of aerospace and automotive NVH and other testing environments characterized by rapid temperature fluctuations.

The Type 8781A50 features a 50 g measurement range and a 100 mV/g sensitivity. Its rugged design incorporates Kistler's own proprietary PiezoStar® shear element crystal technology, along with high-gain integral hybrid microelectronics, for a transducer that offers a broad frequency response and extremely low sensitivity variation over an operating temperature range of -54°C to +120°C (-65°F to +248°F). This technology also ensures high immunity to base strain errors. Sensing elements are housed in a lightweight, ground isolated, welded hermetic titanium package that terminates with a 4-pin connector, for a total mass of just 13 grams.

Models designated with optional "T" suffix incorporate Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) capabilities per IEEE 1451.4-2004 for higher channel count applications. Units are rugged to 5000 g pk shock and are powered by a 20-30 VDC or 2-18 mA constant current supply. Due to its ground isolation, the accelerometer is also immune to parasitic coupling when used with optional shielded Kistler cables (sold separately).

This accelerometer is recommended for use in vehicle powertrain and off-highway NVH investigations. It can also be effectively used to perform joint measurements between aggregates and the car body, as well as measurements on the engine itself, where wider temperature fluctuations are most commonly experienced. The Kistler Type 8781A50 is also ideal for structural analysis and the general vibration testing of automotive subsystems, as well as full vehicle testing.
