Blackburn® Insulation Piercing Connector System Simplifies Tapping Insulated Power Lines

New Thomas & Betts Product Eliminates Stripping and Taping Insulated Overhead Conductors

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Blackburn® Insulation Piercing Connector (IPC) System from Thomas & Betts eliminates the need to strip cable insulation and tape or wrap the connection when tapping into power lines, which significantly reduces time and cost. Designed for main and neutral lines, the Blackburn® IPC System features self-latching insulating covers that insulate and protect connections. The IPC System's mechanical design eliminates the need for compression tools to install. It also accommodates a wide range of cable sizes.

"This is the latest of many engineered solutions that Blackburn® offers in solving customer challenges," said Mike Cawood, product marketing manager for Thomas & Betts. "We developed the IPC System for Mexico's Federal Electricity Commission when it needed to convert bare overhead distribution lines to insulated conductors, and then make electrical connections to the insulted conductors. Tapping and re-insulating numerous connections would have been a costly, lengthy process without the IPC System."

The IPC System consists of one main connector, with insulation-piercing teeth and set screw that eliminate the need to strip the main cable; one neutral connector, which also is installed with a torque-controlled, shear-head set screw; and a self-latching cover, which enables quick and easy installation without the need for tape or shrink-fit insulation, and includes space for a lock-out tag. Each component is available separately or together in a kit for easy handling. Installation is a simple, six-step process. An optional installation tool also is available.

The IPC System's connectors are made of tin-plated aluminum for use with both aluminum and copper tap conductors.
