Picosun Develops ALD for Graphene-Based Displays and Electronics

ESPOO, Finland -

Picosun Oy, a leading Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) equipment manufacturer teams up with several prominent European nanotechnology companies and research institutes to develop novel, graphene-based solutions for display manufacturing, flexible electronics, and electronic component industries.

With its phenomenal physical properties, such as excellent heat and electrical conductivity and structural strength, graphene has a huge amount of potential future applications in several branches of industry. It is paving its way especially strongly into flexible electrical devices, sensors, optoelectronics, and a new generation of displays, where it can replace conductive films. Graphene is also in the roadmap of high-performance electronics, where graphene's extreme heat conductivity can be utilized in developing outstandingly efficient heat sink structures.

The development work for ALD-processing of graphene is a part of the EU 7th Framework Program project QUANTIHEAT ("QUANTItative scanning probe microscopy techniques for HEAT transfer management in nanomaterials and nanodevices"). New ALD equipment and process development is an integral part of the project, widening Picosun's selection of industrial ALD solutions. Picosun already offers the world-leading advancements in ALD and PEALD tools for single wafers and batch processing, and proprietary roll-to-roll technology for continuous ALD.

"We are pleased to collaborate with all the frontline companies and R&D organizations in this strategically important European nanotechnology project. Combined with our previous experience, the know-how accumulated during the QUANTIHEAT project will strengthen our leadership in new ALD applications," summarizes Juhana Kostamo, Managing Director of Picosun.

Picosun's world leading ALD technology enables industrial leap into the future by novel, cutting-edge coating solutions, with four decades of innovative and pioneering expertise in the field. Today, PICOSUN™ ALD systems are in daily production use in numerous prominent industries around the globe. Picosun is based in Finland, with subsidiaries in USA and Singapore, and a world-wide sales and support network.

The project QUANTIHEAT (grant agreement no NMP4-LA-2013-604668) is coordinated by CNRS (Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique), France.
