Original Press Release:

New Machine Picks, Places, Presses Connectors & Components

HARRISBURG, Pa., February 20 - The Tyco Electronics Automation Group (TEAG) recently unveiled the Automatic Pick, Place and Press (AP3) machine. The AP3 is a fully automated in-line pick, place and press system. Manufacturers use the machine for the application of press-fit connectors and odd-form components. The machine is ideal for electronics manufacturers who seek to consolidate processes and conserve factory floor space. The AP3 accepts printed circuit boards up to 30" long by 18" wide.

AP3 machines are capable of processing components up to 1.25" high by 1.25" wide and 12" long. The press is rated for 8 tons and incorporates a press force monitor. The press force monitor tracks the force exerted for each component pressed onto the board, which helps assure that components are properly mounted on the board. Additionally, X/Y accuracy is rated for +/-0.003".

Cycle times to pick, inspect, place and press are typically 4-6 seconds. Tool changes normally take 10-15 seconds. Board loading normally takes 8-10 seconds while 3 to 5 seconds is typical on board unloads.

In addition to press force monitoring, a downward looking camera helps locate the PCB and a second upward looking camera monitors and inspects the components. Components can be fed to the machine in a number of configurations. The operator interface is a touch-screen, mouse and keyboard with full networking capability.
