Broadcom Expands 10GBASE-T Portfolio with Low Power, Dual Port PHY

Dual Port Physical Layer Transceiver Enables OEMs to Drive the Adoption of 10 Gbps Twisted Pair Connectivity in High-Density Networking Equipment for Data Center and Enterprise Applications

IRVINE, Calif., March 30 /-- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced a new dual port 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) physical layer (PHY) transceiver that supports IEEE 802.3 10GBASE-T operation. The dual port configuration reduces the number of devices required in a design, uses less board space and provides better airflow than competing solutions that must stack multiple chips to achieve similar functionality. As a result, the Broadcom(R) dual port 10GBASE-T PHY is ideal for high-density switch and server designs, and will help to drive the adoption of 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) twisted pair connectivity in data centers and enterprise networks. Broadcom's 10GBASE-T PHY supports auto-negotiation between 10 Gbps and legacy Ethernet speeds, enabling compatibility with the installed base of Ethernet technology.

10GbE is fast becoming a requirement for high-speed connectivity in high performance computing and storage. Market research from the Dell'Oro Group indicates that 10 Gigabit (10G) copper connections will potentially reach 6.8 million ports by 2013, a 5-year compounded annual growth rate of more than 100 percent.(1) This growth is fueled in part by increases in server input/output (I/O) speed and storage I/O speed, as well as the additional throughput needed for the aggregation of 1 Gigabit Ethernet (1GbE) links.

To address these market requirements, the Broadcom(R) BCM84812 10GBASE-T transceiver announced today supports two 10GbE ports and provides a complete PHY solution operating at less than six watts of power per port while operating over 100 meters of Category 6A unshielded twisted pair (UTP) or Category 7 cables.

The BCM84812 dual port 10GBASE-T PHY further secures Broadcom's position as the only silicon provider with a complete line of 10G PHY products supporting backplane, twisted pair and optical front panel applications. This comprehensive product portfolio includes support for all 10G PHY standards including 10GBASE-T, 10GBASE-KR, 10GBASE-LRM, 10GBASE-SR/LR and 10GBASE-ER/ZR.

"Demand for high-density switches and servers with 10GBASE-T connectivity is growing, and our new dual PHY addresses the space constraints common in switch and server designs with a low power, high performance solution," said Kevin Brown, Senior Director and General Manager of Broadcom's PHY line of business. "Broadcom continues to lead the Ethernet PHY market. Our new dual port 10GBASE-T PHY consumes less than six watts per port at the full 100 meter distance with 100 percent 10 Gbps traffic and rounds out our industry leading 10GbE portfolio of physical layer chips for twisted pair, fiber, backplanes, and direct-attach copper solutions, complementing our 10GbE controllers and switch silicon, for complete end-to-end solutions."

The BCM84812 supports a broad scope of Ethernet speeds over twisted pair including 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T and 10GBASE-T. With these capabilities, Broadcom's 10GBASE-T PHY provides customers and IT managers with a solution that meets 10G bandwidth connectivity requirements while maintaining complete backward compatibility and interoperability with existing customer products that already use Gigabit Ethernet or Fast Ethernet connectivity.

Technical Information

The BCM84812 10GBASE-T transceiver is a fully integrated, dual port PHY with a digital signal processor (DSP)-based architecture that combines the front-end with analog-to-digital converters, adaptive equalizers, phased locked loops, line drivers, low-density parity check (LDPC) encoders and decoders, echo and crosstalk cancellers, and the industry standard XAUI interface.

The BCM84812 PHY is optimized to enable switch, controller and other general 10GbE connectivity applications with a 4-lane, 3.125 Gbps XAUI interface that enables connectivity to 10GbE media access controllers. One lane of the 4-lane XAUI interface is reserved to support the Serial Gigabit Media Independent Interface (SGMII) and lower speed 100/1000BASE-T operations. The BCM84812 further extends Broadcom's leadership in 10GbE technology and expands an established portfolio of field proven and complete end-to-end 10GbE solutions.
