PESA Emphasizes Streaming Innovations, Mobile Distribution at NAB 2015

Huntsville, Alabama — PESA, a leading designer and manufacturer of streaming solutions as well as professional audio and video distribution products, will emphasize its traditional broadcast television routing and signal management support with integrated streaming, mobile command and control (C2) distribution systems, and its expanding family of PESA Xstream streaming solutions at the 2015 NAB Show (Booth SL4617), which runs April 13-16 in Las Vegas, Nev.

"If you want to see innovation at NAB, come see PESA," said John T. Wright, senior vice president of sales and business development. "Our traditional baseband routing products support video resolutions up to 4K and now work side by side with streaming video sources. From small scale to enterprise-level installations, we support it all through any connector."

Following last year's award-winning technology demonstration at NAB, PESA Live Services (PLS) is redefining the live event experience. Personnel from Toronto-based Ryerson University will be at the PESA booth to demonstrate the system and explain how it was successfully deployed last month for coverage of the 2015 CIS National Men's Final 8 Tournament.

PLS creates a new way to produce and consume live content for private and webcast productions. To the viewer, the PESA Live app for Android and iOS devices is an interactive, multi-channel, and socially integrated viewing experience. For the producer, PLS delivers ads, branding, and live messages to live event attendees and worldwide viewers, providing ample opportunities for ROI.

As streaming technology continues to grow in importance for broadcasters, PESA is setting the pace with PESA Xstream. Last year, the company introduced the C22 compact streaming appliance, which can compress, stream, and share high-quality content between locations, as well as enable streaming in existing video distribution. As part of a larger hybrid broadcast system or standalone streaming appliance, the C22 can be configured as a two-port video encoder or two-port decoder, or can include one of each. Two units can be paired to allow bi-directional live interaction between sites. At NAB, PESA will announce 1080i support for the PESA Xstream C58 and C22 streaming appliances, as well as the C22's MPEG transport stream support and scaled 4K output via HDMI.

The new PESA Blade System (PBS) adds high density H.264 streaming to existing PESA baseband infrastructures. The first two cards for the PBS are the C22-PBS, which supports RTSP and RTMP streams, and the C22-PBS-T, which supports MPEG transport streams. Both dual-channel cards include many of the same features of the C22 standalone appliance. Controlled through Cattrax, PESA's Windows-based control software, each proprietary 2 RU frame houses up to 10 cards and provides up to 20 channels of encoding or decoding.

During NAB, to illustrate the seamless integration between baseband and streaming sources, PESA will show a Cheetah digital video router controlled by the PERC 3000 router control system working with two PBS units, each populated with C22 cards. The encode chassis will convert streams to SDI video so they can be routed via the Cheetah. The decode chassis will take SDI sources from the Cheetah and encode them so they are available for streaming.

PESA has also announced two C22 encoding/decoding cards with similar features to the PBS cards that are compliant with the openGear platform for terminal equipment. Designed for use in the propriety openGear modular frame, the cards are configured and controlled through Ross Video's free control system software, Dashboard. PESA's new cards join more than 300 openGear solutions from more than 50 vendors that support the open architecture platform.

With the use of L-3's APEX UAS (Airborne Pursuit and Exploitation Unmanned Aerial System) suspended above its booth, PESA will demonstrate the integration between command and control, streaming video, and the use of UASs and drones, which can be used to support broadcasters for traffic and weather reports, as well as non-broadcast construction and first responder applications. The UAS will be equipped with an HD-SDI camera feeding video to a C22 in the booth.

For years, PESA Xstream products have been incorporated into VIQ Infinit, a digital media capture and management platform developed by VIQ Solutions to provide large-scale digital media capture and management. At NAB, PESA and VIQ Solutions will demonstrate a deployable digital media management ecosystem for fixed, mobile, and body-worn applications. Ideal for first responders/incident command, law enforcement, training, and evaluation applications, the new system includes annotation, recording/playback management, multi-tiered archiving, and optional streaming functionality. PESA will feature additional equipment from HDT Global, Cobalt Digital, and KROMA Telecom in its booth, and highlight its partnership with Wowza and other content distribution networks (CDNs).

As part of the StudioXperience at NAB (Booth SU621), PESA will showcase its new integration with the NewTek TriCaster production system, which includes the C22 streaming appliance and a new 32x32 router designed to handle baseband sources. As a new member of the NewTek Developer Network, PESA will demonstrate the same integration on Sunday, April 12, during the NewTek Worldwide Reseller Meeting at the Westin Casuarina in Las Vegas.

4K remains a hot topic at NAB. PESA not only offers new Cheetah routers in multiple configurations to manage 4K signals, but can convert existing 3G-SDI Cheetah routers to accept 4K video with a simple plug-and-play upgrade. Its 4K I/O card is a direct drop-in replacement for the standard 16-channel HD/3G-SDI card found in current Cheetah frames. Both UHDTV (3840x2160) and DCI (4096x2160) are supported, and the router can mix and match between 4K CWDM and traditional copper or fiber I/O in the frame. Once software has been reconfigured to accept the new cards, the router can run both 4K and 3G-SDI signals in parallel.
