Penetron Technology Helps Reduce Wasteful Landfill in Vietnam

EAST SETAUKET, N.Y. (PRWEB) June 10, 2019 -- The Cần Thơ waste-to-energy factory in Vietnam was inaugurated in March 2019 to help resolve the solid waste pollution challenge facing the Mekong Delta city. Topical application of Penetron crystalline materials to the facility’s wastewater treatment plant and power plant ensured a durable concrete structure.

Vietnam’s first waste-burning power plant, located in the Mekong Delta city of Cần Thơ, was financed by China’s Everbright International and built by Power China, the project contractor. The US$47 million project is commissioned for 22 years; it can process 400 tons of household waste and generate 150,000 kWh of electricity per day (60 million kWh/year) – using solid waste that was previously put into landfill or incinerated without generating any electricity. The plant also incorporates a wastewater treatment facility; its waste to energy technology and gas emissions fully comply with the Euro 2010 Standard.

“The Cần Thơ plant is the first of its kind in Vietnam that uses advanced technology to treat solid waste and create a more environmentally friendly source of energy,” explains Jozef Van Beeck, Director of International Sales & Marketing for The Penetron Group. “It will help the community reduce a chronic pollution problem and reduce the strain on the environment, a big step towards more sustainable development.”

Creating a Vastly More Durable Structure

During construction of the Cần Thơ plant infrastructure, a Penetron Vietnam-certified team from Zhong Yi Feng Construction worked quickly to seal any active leaks in the concrete structures with PENEPLUG, a rapid-setting, crystalline-based repair mortar. In a next step, the interior surfaces of the concrete wastewater treatment tanks and canals were coated with an application of PENETRON, an integral crystalline waterproofing material.

Widely used for waterproofing and chemical protection of above and below ground concrete structures, PENETRON is applied by brush or spray to either the positive or the negative side of the concrete. The active ingredients in the crystalline material reacts with moisture in the concrete to generate an insoluble network of crystals that self-heals and seals the micro-cracks and pores within the concrete matrix. These crystals penetrate deeply into the concrete to ensure an impermeable concrete matrix, resulting in a vastly more durable structure.

Sealer for Abrasion-Resistant Concrete

In a final step, the floors of the Cần Thơ plant were sealed with PENESEAL FH floor hardener. This clear, reactive penetrating sealer permanently protects and strengthens concrete and masonry by penetrating deep into concrete surfaces to react with the concrete and solidify the matrix into a harder, denser, and more abrasion-resistant concrete mass.

“Once the project specifications were outlined, our local Penetron team worked with the local applicator to complete the job on schedule,” adds Jozef Van Beeck. “The successful application of the Penetron System in a project as complex as the Cần Thơ facility underlines the versatility of the entire range of Penetron products.”
