SecurSign 2.0 Delivers Digital Signatures for PDFs Using Server-based Solution

Lansdowne, PA, July 30, 2002 - A leading provider of PDF-related software applications today introduced a new server-based software application that adds unique security and authentication capabilities to Portable Document Format (PDF) files. SecurSign 2.0 is the first and only server-based application to allow PDF users to add digital signatures directly to PDFs, as well as apply standard Adobe(r) security features to these documents at the 40-bit or 128-bit encryption level. SecurSign 2.0, which is available for Windows, Linux 7, AIX, Mac OS X, Solaris and HP-UX, was developed by Appligent, (www.appligent.com), a suburban-Philadelphia software developer committed to helping organizations more easily use, secure, manipulate and deliver PDFs.

Over the past decade, PDFs have become the standard of choice for electronic publishing in a range of security-intensive industries, including financial services, pharmaceuticals, the legal industry, as well as the U.S. government. PDFs' cross platform usability, as well as their consistency make them an ideal format for a range of electronic publishing activity-everything from submitting Web-based credit card applications to delivering rigorous clinical trial results to the Food and Drug Administration.

"Within these environments, security takes on new importance, as validity and authentication become a paramount concern within organizations that rely on PDFs to communicate and document a wide range of economic and financial activity," says Mark Gavin, Appligent founder and chief technology officer, who has been developing PDF applications since the format first became available in the early 1990s.

SecurSign 2.0 is compatible with the Adobe(r) Acrobat Digital Signature Mechanism found in Acrobat(r) 4.0 and 5.0. The software is a server-based solution that allows for the high-volume, on-demand application of security and digital signatures to PDF documents-automating the process while delivering RSA quality security. Documents signed using SecurSign 2.0 can be verified using Adobe(r) Acrobat(r). SecurSign 2.0 uses the Adobe(r) Raw Signature Format to create digital signatures using standard X.509 digital certificates from a commercial certification authority.

Both 40-bit and 128-bit encryption offer user and owner passwords and restrictions for printing, modifying, and copying text and graphics, as well as adding or changing notes and form fields. The added security of 128-bit encryption provides the ability to also restrict filling in or signing form fields, accessibility, document assembly and high-resolution printing.
