New High Speed PCD Tools from KOMET Produce Excellent Dry Cutting Results
KOMET of AMERICA introduced two new PCD tools designed for high speed cutting in Aluminum, Magnesium and Reinforced Plastics at IMTS 2002. They are a new PCD tipped center cutting Endmill and a new PCD tipped straight flute "Drillcut 24" drill.
Although the tools are designed with coolant through the tool capability, they have produced excellent penetration rates and finish results under absolutely dry cutting and mist coolant conditions.
The PCD tipped Endmill comes in two styles, a 2-flute style and a 3-flute. The 2-flute style comes in diameters 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, and 12 mm. The 3-flute style comes in diameters 16 mm and 20 mm.
Under absolutely dry cutting conditions in Aluminum, the PCD Endmill was run at a sustained rate of 15,000 rpm and, using circular interpolation, drilled a hole at .004 ipr, then milled a contour at .002 feed per tooth producing consistent size and surface finish results.
The PCD tipped straight flute "Drillcut 24" drills range in diameter from 5 mm to 15.5 mm with standard coolant through the tool, a 130° drill point, 2-flutes, 4 lands and a 5 x diameter length capability.
During testing, the "Drillcut 24" was held in a tool holder with a maximum runout of .0001 in. (3 µm). Using 1000 psi (70 bar) high-pressure coolant, an 8.505 mm diameter "Drillcut 24" drill with 5 x diameter capability consistently made and held an 8.52 mm diameter hole in Aluminum. The drill was run at 15,000 rpm at a feedrate of .009 ipr producing a high quality 24 µin (0.61 µm) surface finish.
The new PCD line of tooling from the JEL division of KOMET of AMERICA will provide high quality machined surfaces and holes and higher production rates with lower tooling cost per hole.
