PC Adapter Acquires CAN Messages in Real Time

Downers Grove, Illinois Contemporary Controls has extended its family of CAN products with a PC Card Adapter that adds a physical layer option for CANopen networks.

The ICPCM-CO enables OEMs to instantly connect all CAN networks to a notebook computer.

"An external power supply is normally needed for this application, but the ICPCM-CO has a DC-to-DC converter which eliminate this requirement. This is a great convenience for users." says Bennet Levine, the company's R&D manager.

For real-time capture of high-speed messages, this product provides enhanced features such as 128 kB onboard CAN buffer for use on high-speed CAN networks and includes 2 kB dual port RAM for high-speed data exchange between the card and an attached PC.

By integrating intelligence into the PC Card adapter itself, CAN traffic can be captured in real-time. This is important because Windows programs and Operating Systems do not process data in real time. The buffer minimizes the possibility of missing messages.

It is outfitted with the SJA1000 CAN controller chip, offering the full range of data rates up to 1 Mbps and following CANopen specifications.

Additional features include listen-only mode and support for 11-bit and 29-bit identifiers. And with the CANopen physical layer, the CAN signal is optically isolated from the PC.

The ICPCM-CO is shipped with a CD-ROM disk containing Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP drivers and sample applications. It uses the same Application Program Interface as other Contemporary Controls products, the CANISA (for PC/ISA) and the CAN104 (for PC/104).

Cost per unit is $595.00. A complete data sheet is available at www.ccontrols.com/pdf/ICPCMSeries.pdf
