The New ADAM-5510/KW Reduces Programming Headaches

PC-based controller for automation engineers who prefer to program in languages other than C/C++

Cincinnati, Ohio (April 21, 2004)- Advantech Corporation, Industrial Automation Group introduces the ADAM-5510/KW PC-based controller for automation engineers who prefer to program in languages other than C/C++. Engineers can now combine several easy-to-use languages, using the programming language that best suites different parts of the process.

The ADAM-5510 PC-based controller is widely used today for SCADA and plant automation. To make this popular controller easier to use for automation engineers, Advantech is introducing the ADAM-5510/KW, a process and logical control system, which features the IEC-61131-3 standard programming languages. Instead of developing functions and control strategies in C/C++, you can now combine programming languages like Ladder Diagram, Functional Block Diagram, Instruction List, Structured Text and Sequential Function Chart. These five standardized IEC-61131-3 programming languages have easy-to-use interfaces so you can drag-and-drop your automation processes for faster and easier development. They also offer powerful programming features that are similar to C/C++.

More Power

The new ADAM-5510/KW also offers higher performance than ADAM-5510. The memory has been upgraded to 640 KB SRAM and 1 MB flash disk to improve system efficiency and flexibility. In addition to the RS-232/485 network, the ADAM-5510/KW is equipped with 4 COM ports and Modbus support, which creates more communication options and possibilities for connecting to remote I/O or other third party devices that are based on RS-232/485 or Modbus networks.

Multitasking OS

The new multi-tasking OS enhances the stability of ADAM-5510/KW, and is therefore suitable for critical control applications. This multi-tasking OS is based on a standard multitasking operating system that supports preemptive scheduling. This allows for exact prediction of user tasks. Each user task is assigned to a watchdog that activates the associated system tasks and takes corrective action should a real-time violation arise.

The ADAM-5510/KW provides end-users with increased performance, while faster and easier development will give a competitive edge to system integrators. With so many improvements over the popular ADAM-5510, Advantech is confident that the new ADAM-5510/KW will receive a warm welcome.
