Zebra Technologies Introduces New Adhesive Tab Closure on Its Z-Band Direct® Antimicrobial Patient Wristbands

VERNON HILLS, Ill., May 30 / -- Zebra Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ:ZBRA), a global leader in delivering on-demand specialty printing solutions for the healthcare industry, today announced the introduction of a new adhesive tab closure on its next generation Z-Band Direct patient identification wristbands. Designed to improve the ease of use, comfort and the security of the antimicrobial wristbands, the new tab closure replaces the adhesive and liner that formerly extended the entire length of the wristband.

Available in infant, pediatric and adult sizes, the wristbands will continue to feature a topcoat layer that resists alcohol, water, foams, soaps and blood as well as a patent-pending, antimicrobial coating that protects wristbands against S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and E. coli, the three leading causes of hospital infections in the United States.

Research from the Joint Commission International Center for Patient Safety reports that incorrect patient identification is involved in 13 percent of surgery errors and 67 percent of blood transfusion errors. Using bar codes on patient wristbands has been shown to increase the accuracy of patient data available at the point of care, resulting in a correct match between the patient and the service or treatment provided.

"Lost, damaged or illegible wristbands can hinder positive patient identification and lead to medical errors," says Debbie Murphy, global practice leader, life sciences at Zebra Technologies. "Zebra's patient identification wristbands address this challenge directly and give providers a convenient solution for positively identifying patients in today's fast paced healthcare environment."

Zebra's bar coded wristbands protect patient privacy and information integrity while ensuring that nurses, medical assistants, lab technicians and other personnel can correctly identify patients and view corresponding medical information every time the wristband is scanned. Use of the wristbands also enables healthcare providers to meet patient safety and privacy standards, such as those set by The Joint Commission and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

"Bar coded patient identification wristbands provide the necessary foundation for preventing medical errors by making accurate patient information available at the point of care. This not only improves the effectiveness of five rights checks for bedside medication administration, but it also provides a platform for extending safeguards to other patient care activities, including specimen collection and blood administration," says Murphy. "The new and improved wristband line gives our healthcare customers a cost-effective, efficient way to meet their patient safety goals and provides a secure patient identification solution that remains scannable throughout the duration of a patient's hospital stay."

The new wristbands offer six options for color coding to communicate patient risk factors or special needs. For more information about Zebra's patient identification wristbands, please call +1 800 423 0442 or visit Zebra's Web site at www.zebra.com/.
