Passivated Nichrome SMD Resistors suit high-moisture areas.

Press Release Summary:

Able to perform in high-humidity environments, RNCS series precision resistors feature resistive material with additional element to reduce susceptibility to moisture corrosion. Glass passivation, added prior to final epoxy passivation, ensures isolation from humid environments. Model-specific resistance ranges for .1% tolerance and 25 ppm TCR include 25 W to 332 kW; 25 W to 800 kW; and 25 W to 1 MegW.

Stackpole Electronics, Inc. Announces RNCS Passivated Nichrome Precision SMD Chip Range Expansion

Increased resistance range covers wider range of design requirements...

RALEIGH, NC (February 15, 2007) - Stackpole Electronics, Inc. announces a significant expansion to its RNCS series. The RNCS series is a passivated Nichrome precision SMD resistor series that performs as well in high humidity environments as the more costly Tantalum Nitride SMD chips. This range expansion ensures that design engineers can utilize the RNCS for higher resistances in applications that require operation in high moisture environment.

The RNCS utilizes several materials, design, and process improvements compared to standard Nichrome thin film precision chips. First, an additional process is done to achieve a substrate which is 30% smoother than typical substrates for this type of product. Second, the resistive material has an additional element added to reduce its susceptibility to moisture corrosion. Finally, an additional glass passivation is added prior to the final epoxy passivation to ensure isolation from even the most humid environments.

The RNCS series is an ideal choice for a variety of precision applications in non-climate controlled environments, including industrial controls and power supplies, meters, instrumentation, data and voice communications equipment and servers, HVAC.

The expanded resistance ranges for .1% tolerance and 25 ppm TCR are as follows:
· RNCS 16 (0603) 25 ohms - 332K ohms
· RNCS 20 (0805) 25 ohms - 800K ohms
· RNCS 32 (1206), RNCS 57 (2010), and RNCS 63 (2512) 25 ohms - 1 Meg ohm

Stackpole Engineering Manager Kory Schroeder comments, "The only weakness in the RNCS series previously was the limited value range. Now the RNCS can truly accommodate designers changing over not only those designs using Tantalum Nitride technology, but also those who had been using a standard Nichrome thin film chip and discovered they had a moisture corrosion problem."

The RNCS series is available in tape and reel packaging in standard package quantities with pricing ranging from $12.00 per thousand to $250.00 per thousand depending on TCR and tolerance. Standard lead time for the RNCS series is 6 to 8 weeks with samples available in 3 - 4 weeks.
