Pass & Seymour/Legrand Tamper-Resistant Receptacles Featured on the DIY Network's 'Deconstruction'

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (January 22, 2009) - Pass & Seymour/Legrand (P&S) was recently featured on the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Network's Deconstruction, to demonstrate the built-in safety benefits of Tamper-Resistant electrical receptacles. The episode offered a glimpse into the manufacturing and quality testing process at P&S's Greensboro, N.C., facility.

The television series examines various elements of home improvement, such as windows, plumbing, paint, energy savings and electrical wiring. With experiments and demonstrations, it details how products are made and the benefits they offer to homeowners.

P&S facility managers and engineers explained the safety function of a Tamper-Resistant Receptacle, or outlet, which has a built-in shutter system that prevents children from inserting metal objects into the slots. The shutters obstruct objects from touching electrically live components, but plugs can be inserted and removed as usual. These devices provide the most reliable protection against child electrical injuries.

Sticking a metal paper clip into the devices, P&S demonstrated how easily electric shocks and burns can occur with a traditional outlet, and how a Tamper-Resistant device can prevent injury.

"People don't give much thought to electrical outlets, but they play a significant role in our lives and can't be forgotten when considering home safety measures," said Pat Davin, Vice President and General Manager at P&S. "We're grateful for the opportunity to share the science behind tamper-resistant receptacle technology and hope it raises viewers' awareness of electrical dangers."

In 2008 the National Electrical Code® (NEC) was revised, including a requirement for Tamper-Resistant Receptacles to be installed in new homes. P&S is an active member of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association task force responsible for Tamper-Resistant Code adoption advocacy, state by state.
