Panasas Extends Parallel Storage Leadership with Higher Capacity ActiveStor Storage Clusters

ActiveStor 3150 delivers 150 terabytes per rack in a fully configured, plug-and-play scaleable storage system

FREMONT, Calif., July 9 -- Panasas, Inc., the leader in parallel clustered storage solutions for the High Performance Computing (HPC) market, today announced the addition of the 15 terabyte (TB) ActiveStor 3150 to the ActiveStor 3000 parallel storage cluster product family. This new high-capacity solution is optimized for use with data-intensive Linux cluster applications such as seismic processing, electronic design automation (EDA) simulation, and large-scale modeling where superior application performance and low cost per gigabyte are the primary buying criteria.

The ActiveStor 3150 (AS3150) delivers 15 TBs of storage capacity per 4U shelf, and up to 150 TBs in a single-rack system which can be installed in as little as 15 minutes. In addition, multiple rack systems can be configured in a single storage cluster that can scale to petabytes of capacity to simplify storage management. Customers can maximize the use of their compute clusters by eliminating the wait time for data from storage, improve IT productivity, and accelerate time to results. The AS3150 extends the ActiveStor 3000 product family which also includes the AS3100 which supports up to 10 TBs in a 4U shelf, or 100 TBs in a single-rack system.

"The ActiveStor 3000 product family is designed to meet the needs of customers running modeling and simulation applications that need the highest capacity with the best price/performance ratio," said Len Rosenthal, chief marketing officer for Panasas. "The AS3150 packs 50 percent more capacity in the same single-rack system configuration at a cost per gigabyte of up to 30 percent less than the AS3100. Additionally, organizations receive the full benefits of the highest available bandwidth, unsurpassed scalability, complete data availability and exceptional manageability."

The ActiveStor 3000 product family is powered by the third generation of the company's operating environment, ActiveScale 3.0. The ActiveScale 3.0 operating environment adds several new features to the established PanFS(TM) parallel file system that Panasas has deployed in top companies and scientific organizations in more than 25 countries around the world. The ActiveScale 3.0 enhancements provide large-scale reliability and manageability, including new predictive self-management capabilities and an increase in client performance by a factor of 3X to over 500MB/s per client, and over 10GB/s in aggregate.

All Panasas storage clusters contain the object-based PanFS(TM) parallel file system. Using Panasas storage, customers can achieve maximum application performance while reducing total cost of ownership (TCO) by driving the cost and complexity out of their storage infrastructure. The fully-parallel Panasas DirectFlow(R) protocol provides direct access between Linux cluster nodes and Panasas storage to eliminate costly performance bottlenecks that legacy storage systems can create when used with parallel applications. Additionally, a single global namespace dramatically simplifies cluster management.
