Padless Touch Sensor offers 4 msec response time.

Press Release Summary:

With open architecture design, Padless Touch Sensor consists of solid-state touch control technology that uses signal generation and detection. Able to operate in -20 to +105°C temperatures, product is rated for more than 5 million touch cycles and does not incorporate any mechanical link between touch interface and control electronics. Touch surface can be designed with most dielectric materials less than 25 mm thick and touch sensitivity is adjustable.

Original Press Release:

New Touch Control Technology Available from Tyco Electronics

HARRISBURG, Pa., July 18, 2003 - Tyco Electronics recently announced that it has entered a worldwide exclusive licensing agreement with Pressenk Instruments, Inc. of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Under the terms of the agreements, Tyco Electronics will market a Padless Touch Sensor (PTS). PTS is a solid-state touch control technology that uses patented signal generation and detection to provide an innovative alternative to other switch technologies such as membrane switches, mechanical keyboards and solid-state keyboards. PTS technology provides cost effective design alternatives beyond existing solid-state keyboards, such as capacitive, infrared, piezo-effect, field-effect, or other types. Appliance controls, industrial process controls, automotive, kiosks, point of sale terminals and medical equipment are among the many applications where PTS technology can be applied. The open architecture design of the PTS allows for easy integration or retrofit into existing control switch applications.

PTS technology provides robust and versatile performance in a wide range of environments. The solid-state control hardware can be environmentally sealed to meet IP67. The device operates in temperatures ranges from -20 degrees C up to +105 degrees C.

The touch surface can be designed with virtually any dielectric material including glass, plastic, marble, leather, or any rough or smooth surface less than 25 mm thick. Touch sensitivity is adjustable and operators can properly actuate the device with or without gloves. The touch surface area size is customizable to the application. Response time, once the PTS is touched, is less than 4 milli-seconds per key.

The PTS is rated for more than five million touch cycles and does not incorporate any mechanical link between the touch interface and the control electronics, further increasing product life.

Designers may select discrete electronic components or an ASIC depending on the application and control scheme. As part of this product offering, Tyco Electronics is providing full turnkey electronic control systems where PTS is coupled with control and power switching components. Tyco Electronics product portfolio supports full vertical integration including printed circuit boards and assemblies, connectors, cable assemblies, power switching components and circuit protection.
