GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms Announces WANic(TM) 5434 Packet Processor

Powerful PCI Express solution features OCTEON(TM) Plus processor, excellent thermal characteristics

o Four lane PCI Express communication with host

o 500MHz OCTEON(TM) Plus 6-core CN5434-NSP processor

o ~25 watts power dissipation

o Choice of copper or fiber Ethernet

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA June 5, 2008 Expanding still further the company's range of leading edge solutions for telecommunications applications, GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms today announced the WANic(TM) 5434 packet processor. The company's first packet processor to feature PCI Express, with four lanes of PCI Express bus providing high speed communication with the host, the WANic 5434 is a powerful yet thermally efficient device. It features the high performance 500MHz Cavium OCTEON(TM) Plus 6-core MIPS64(TM)-based CN5434-NSP processor. Designed to attain the quality and reliability requirements for NEBS compliance, the WANic 5434 will receive its first public showing at NXTcomm (June 16 - 19, Las Vegas Convention Center).

"The deployment of applications featuring secure IP communications and multi-gigabit packet processing continues to grow, and the announcement of the WANic 5434 further reinforces our strong product offering in this area," said Rubin Dhillon, Global Director of Communications Product Management at GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms. "This is our first PCI Express packet processor, and extends still further our leadership in packet processing and the wide range of options we are able to offer our customers."

At the heart of the WANic 5434 is the 500MHz OCTEON Plus 6-core CN5434-NSP processor which enables packet inspection at layers 2-7 for secure high-speed connectivity and complex security processing with wire speed performance (up to 4Gbits/second). The company plans to implement other 5400 family processors on the board in the future to enable support for an even broader range of applications. Compute-intensive tasks are off-loaded from the host CPU to keep line rates high. Its power requirements are low, at around 25 watts. The board supports 1 GByte of DDR2 packet memory (implemented using VLP mini-RDIMM modules). Four front panel access ports of 1000BaseT (RJ-45 connectors) or 1000BaseSX (fiber SFP transceivers) Gigabit Ethernet are available.

Support for Debian Linux is provided: other operating system support may be available on request. A comprehensive development package - including U-Boot loader and POST and a Linux Support Package (LSP) - is available, simplifying development and improving time-to-revenue.
