Packaging System produces plastic, microwavable container.

Press Release Summary:

Custom Polystar system produces all-plastic microwavable containers with soft plastic, peel-open lids using Polywelding(TM) spinwelding process. Lids, with no sharp edges, incorporate active oxygen absorber, which provides shelf life for container contents equal to containers with metal ends. Cernotec's Delta Tau motion control system enables process to use combination of pressure and spinning to fuse plastic Polystar lid to Omni container at rates of 600 units/min.

Cernotec Helps Food Packaging Suppliers Deliver New Patented Kid-Friendly Microwavable Container

Innovative Solution for Hormel Foods' Kid Kitchen Product Line

GREENVILLE, SC - When Silgan Containers Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Silgan Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: SLGN) and the largest food can supplier in North America, needed to implement their revolutionary packaging system for Hormel Foods Corporation, they turned to Cernotec for a uniquely engineered motion control solution.

Cernotec is a fast-growing Greenville, SC-based technology integrator that specializes in turnkey manufacturing engineering and enterprise software solutions.

The new packaging system boasts an all-plastic microwavable container with a soft plastic peel-open lid. Created through a patented spinwelding process called Polywelding(TM), the Polystar packaging system offers food processors an easy-opening peelable lid with no sharp edges. It also offers attractive packaging that incorporates an active oxygen absorber which provides a shelf life for its contents that is equal to similar containers with metal ends.

"The Polywelding method represents a significant opportunity for food processors," said Bill Heyn, general manager of OmniStar Division, Silgan Specialty. "The functionality of the package along with its high consumer convenience makes the Polystar packaging system preferable by consumers both young and old. And, from a manufacturing perspective, Cernotec's solution delivered the results so that the speed of Polywelding is similar to, if not better than, that of many traditional double-seaming metal container operations," Heyn added.

Cernotec's high-speed Delta Tau motion control system enables the Polywelding process to use a combination of pressure and spinning to fuse the plastic Polystar lid to the Omni container at a rate of 600 units per minute. After the bowl has been filled, the lid is applied to the container with the necessary amount of pressure combined with a high-speed spinning action that applies just enough energy to fuse the two pieces together. Since the applied rotational forces melt the plastic and wipe away potential contaminates, the reliability of the seal meets food processors requirements.

"Cernotec is known for solving problems where other engineering firms have failed. We're literally one of a handful of integrators with the motion control experience to deliver this kind of process," said Ray Chassevent, president of Cernotec. "With our resources and expertise, we offer manufacturers like Silgan a full range of engineering, IT, and software solutions to meet the needs of factory floor productivity and enable enterprise and supply chain visibility."
