Selerant's Got a Brand New Bag -- DevEX® Completes PLM Cycle with New Packaging Management Suite

NEW YORK, Feb. 23 -- Selerant (http://www.selerant.com/) announces the anticipated addition of a Packaging Management suite to its comprehensive Product Lifecycle Management solution, DevEX®. The Packaging Management suite equips corporations with the ability to tightly control the design and specification stages of package development for consumer products goods companies (CPG).

"Our customers have quickly responded to our vision of a comprehensive solution that integrates every aspect of the product development lifecycle into one cohesive picture," explains Carlo Colombo, Selerant CEO. "Our next logical step was to extend beyond the actual product development into packaging design and specification."

The scalable structure of DevEX enables corporations to easily add the Packaging Specifications suite to its current implementation. As with the other suites, the Packaging Specification tools can easily integrate within the solution as well as with legacy systems. This integration expedites the packaging design process by elevating the project visibility, automating processes, tracking approvals, distributing designs, and allowing team members to quickly create labeling from ingredients specified in the Formulation and Recipe Development suite.

Packaging Design

The Packaging Management suite is actually two modules: Packaging Design and Packaging Specifications. "We heard a distinct need of our customers to be able to track the 2-D and 3-D drawings of packages through the first rough draft to the final design." Colombo goes on to say, "We added the ability to annotate comments directly on the 3-D design, distribute it, and archive it with an automated version number. This enables a team to quickly track the evolution of a design and return to a specific point if necessary."

In addition to the annotation and archival of drawings, the Packaging Design tool includes a user-defined review process that tracks and escalates the drawing for approval via electronic signature. As with the other workflow processes, team members can define event-driven email notification for final approval, changes needed, or when a new drawing is uploaded to the central database.

Drawings can be uploaded internally in DevEX, integrated from a legacy system, or synchronized with DevEX from the separate Supplier Collaboration site. This site operates independently of DevEX, allowing suppliers to update their data, such as raw material properties, as well as upload files without directly logging into DevEX.

"Many of our clients have vendors that also service their competition," explains Colombo, "They face the dilemma of needing an easier way to keep their information updated, but their proprietary data confidential and secured. Our solution was an independent site with one-way synchronization, allowing them to capitalize on their solution without compromising their invaluable data."

Knowledge Base

Keeping suppliers from view, DevEX's database can be easily searched internally by team members with customizable queries yielding results that can be distributed, archived, or printed. These results can include imperative details such as past package designs, costs, graphics, labeling, and regulatory compliance documentation.

Packaging Specifications

The Packaging Specifications module acts as an organization and checkpoint tool to ensure the package meets all requirements for safe product handling, labeling, and government regulations by utilizing defined workflow processes. "Corporations can create their own workflow processes or use one of our standardized templates," Colombo adds, "This framework empowers their team members to easily validate that all requirements are met as well as highlight tasks that require immediate attention."

The Packaging Specifications includes many standardized templates that can be customized: Raw Materials, Formulas, Bottles, Cans, Cups,, Closures, Labels, Pallet Patterns, Shippers, Procedural (quality, performance, process).

"Our customers have asked for a competitive advantage," states Colombo, "One of the best we can give them is an expedited product development lifecycle. With standardized templates, they automatically have best of breed practices established for them to use immediately to begin realizing a return on their investment. "
