OmniVision's High Definition RGB-Ir Sensor Brings High-End Surveillance Capabilities to Consumer Security Applications

Low-Power, Compact OV2736 Image Sensor Delivers 1080p High Definition Video with Superior Low-Light Performance

OmniVision Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced a new image sensor that brings high-end image quality and functionality to consumer security cameras. The OV2736 is an RGB-Ir PureCel® image sensor that is capable of capturing high-quality 1080p full high definition (HD) video with high dynamic range (HDR) in extremely dark conditions. Due to the sensor's compact package dimensions and minimal power requirements, the OV2736 is an ideal imaging solution for battery-powered indoor or outdoor home security cameras.

According to a report by Reportlinker, the home security solutions market is expected to be a $74.28 billion global market by 2025, increasing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.1 percent over the next decade. Products launched in the security space are now proven in the commercial markets, and technologies formerly limited to high-end segments are beginning to be adopted into the next generation of home security cameras.

"The capabilities of commercial and consumer security cameras are quickly converging due to the rapid development of low-light imaging technologies," said Chris Yiu, senior strategic marketing manager at OmniVision. "As a pioneer of RGB-Ir and HDR technology, with numerous products equipped with these technologies already deployed in the market, OmniVision is proud to bring the OV2736 to no-compromise home surveillance systems."

Rather than a traditional mechanical IR filter, cameras built on the OV2736 utilize dual-band color filters to deliver superior image quality in near-total darkness. The sensor's small ¼-inch optical format and minimal 110 mW power consumption ensure that it is both easily integrated into mainstream industrial designs, and suitable for battery-operated cameras as well.

The OV2736 is currently available for sampling and is expected to enter volume production in the third quarter of 2017.
