Otto Environmental Systems North America, Inc. Granted Patent License for RFID-Based Refuse Container Collection

CHARLOTTE, NC — Otto Environmental Systems North America, Inc. has been granted a non-exclusive license related to a portfolio of patents directed to radio frequency identification (RFID)-based refuse container interrogation and collection by inventor and entrepreneur LeRoy G. Hagenbuch.

Otto currently is the only party in the United States that is authorized to sell fully automated RFID truck systems, such as its Res-CT System, under these patents. This license not only protects Otto, but also extends to customers who purchase RFID technology systems from Otto. In addition, any manufacturer who sells RFID technology systems to Otto is protected. Otto is excited to have been granted this license and to be able to provide its customers with the opportunity to safely take advantage of this powerful technology.

The patents licensed to Otto generally relate to the use of RFID tags embedded in refuse containers such as household carts or larger containers and bins. Collectively, thosepatents cover, among other things, processes for refuse collection whereby records are generated for the cart loading location, the identity of the cart being loaded, thetime of collection and/or the weight of the material in the carts being loaded. Some or all of this information may be downloaded to a central location and used for any number of purposes, including fleet management, customer billing and confirmation of refuse container pickup.
