Tellabs Introduces a Simpler Way to Boost Bandwidth

Upgrade to 40 Gigabytes simplified with new transponder for Tellabs(R) 7100 Optical Transport System

NAPERVILLE, Ill., Feb. 25 /-- Bandwidth demands for today's digital voice, TV and Internet services keep increasing. In fact, even more bandwidth-hungry services are coming down the road. This increased demand means service providers need to add capacity to their networks as quickly as possible. Previously, that process required the integration of additional hardware or even the complete replacement of existing networks. Not anymore.

Like a road carrying traffic, a provider's network only allows so much data traffic to travel through at any given time. The new 40 Gigabyte (GB) transponder module for the Tellabs(R) 7100 Optical Transport System (OTS) is a fully integrated and easy to install upgrade that widens the road, allowing four times more traffic to travel through. It also gives providers the ability to increase the bandwidth available on their existing networks without extensive network redesign or reconfiguration. Now existing roads can be widened instead of ripping out the old roads to install new ones.

Behold: Burgeoning Broadband
Other 40 GB solutions require the installation of additional stand-alone hardware, the equivalent of building new roads. But the new 40 GB transponder simply plugs into the network's existing Tellabs 7100 OTS switches, resulting in a 300% increase in capacity. That's like widening a one-lane road to four lanes.

Through this simple upgrade, the Tellabs 7100 OTS delivers an increase in bandwidth from 440 GB to 1.76 Terabyte (TB). This increase prepares networks to offer HDTV, video-on-demand and high-speed Internet access.

"Now, you don't need to redesign your existing network to meet the increasing bandwidth demand from video and other bandwidth-hungry services," said Dan Kelly, executive vice president of global products for Tellabs. "The new 40 GB transponder module for the Tellabs 7100 OTS is a simple solution that enables service providers to save money as they provide better service to their customers."

The Tellabs 7100 OTS family now offers 1.76 TB of bandwidth capacity in an extremely compact footprint. In fact, the Tellabs(R) 7100 Nano(TM) OTS is just half the size of other comparable systems.

The Tellabs 7100 OTS and the new 40 GB transponder module give providers the necessary hardware to build broadband capacity into networks for today, tomorrow and beyond. The Tellabs 7100 OTS is currently available, and the new 40 GB transponder module will be available in June 2008.

The Tellabs 7100 OTS is an integral part of the Tellabs(R) AssuredEthernet(SM) solution. For more about how the Tellabs 7100 OTS powers the most advanced and reliable networks visit: www.tellabs.com/products/7000/tellabs7100.shtml.
