Avago Technologies Announces Enhanced Three-Channel Encoder for Use in Industrial Automation Machines

Competitively Priced Optical Transmissive Encoder Series Offers Increased Resolution and Easy Installation to Help Reduce Design Time to Market

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 2, 2008

Avago Technologies, a leading supplier of analog interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications, today announced a new series of low cost, high performance three-channel optical incremental encoders for use in a wide range of office and industrial automation applications. Avago's HEDM-5540 encoder series maintains the form, fit and function of its predecessor HEDx-5xxx series for easy conversion while providing increased resolutions up to 1000 counts per revolution (CPR). Typical applications include printers, plotters, tape drives, positioning tables and automatic handlers.

The HEDM-5540 series offers several benefits such as minimal conversion cost to existing customers, proven ease of assembly, and more accurate position control with the use of an index as a reference point. In addition, this encoder series can operate in temperatures from -40 to 100 degrees C to meet most industrial temperature requirements.

Building on the robustness, versatility and reliability of Avago's HEDx-5xxx and HEDx-9xxx series, Avago's new HEDM-5540 series includes a lensed LED source, an integrated circuit with detectors and output circuitry, and a new high temperature Mylar codewheel. In addition to providing more value for the same price and fit, this enhanced encoder series will enable customers to easily make the transition to the HEDM-5540 encoder series.

Avago's HEDM-5540 series has a third channel index output in addition to two channel quadrature. This index output is a 90 electrical degree, high true index pulse which is generated once for each full rotation of the codewheel. Moreover, the HEDM-5540 series is specifically designed for easy mating to a wide range of connectors from a variety of common manufacturers.
