Opticis Ships 2.5gbps Pluggable VCSEL Optical Transceivers

Unique design enables high speed with low jitter - ideal for short-haul applications

SEOUL, South Korea - Aug. 21, 2002 - Opticis Co., Ltd., the leading provider of optical extension cables and transceivers, today began shipping its 2.5Gbps Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) LC type optical transceiver, the M3-250-PAT, to customers worldwide. Based on Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) technology, Opticis' 850nm multi-mode transceivers meet the high speed and low jitter requirements in short-haul applications. The small form factor and pluggable features of the transceiver enable a customer to more efficiently exploit limited space resources within systems, and readily reconfigure them in the field. With IEEE Standard 802.3z compliance, the 2.5Gbps transceiver serves the emerging markets for InfiniBand, Fibre Channel, and Gigabit Ethernet.

The 2.5Gbps SFP transceiver owes its performance and reliability to the quality of the design and an in-house manufacturing process. Opticis also designs and manufactures a low capacitance PIN photo diode, with the effect of lower packaging costs by allowing a wider margin in PIN-PD alignment, which in turn also improves signal quality and reduces jitter. The mechanical packaging is designed for low RFI/EMI characteristics as well as to minimize ESD effects. The components and the transceiver are manufactured using a state-of-the-art GaAs process in a clean-room environment. The transceiver is assembled and tested by Opticis technicians, and then verified and certified to comply with FCC, CDRH, and UL standards. All products undergo reliability testing using extended environmental stress tests based on industry and military criteria.

"With a short foundry lead time and flexible manufacturing, the
customer receives the benefits of complete life cycle control," said II Kim, CTO and Co-Founder of Opticis. "This ensures a reliable and consistent product that is not subject to variations resulting from subcontracted technology."

"To demonstrate our edge in the field, we provide eye diagrams with our samples that exhibit the low optical jitter inherent in the design," said Byeong-Ho Park, Opticis' VP of Marketing and COO. "Opticis shows the performance features, the reliability, and the right price for design-ins and design-wins."

Hyun-Kuk Shin, CEO of Opticis added, "The adaptability of our VCSEL- based solutions to support various emerging protocols gives us considerable leverage in delivering the right products the market is looking for."
