Optical Switch Cards automate test applications.

Press Release Summary:

Model 7090 1x16 optical switches route single signal to 16 DUTs or 16 instruments. They switch optical signals in 1290 to 1650 nm range and use single mode fibers with FC/SPC and FC/APC connectors. All Model 7090 cards are compatible with company's GPIB-programmable Model 7001 and 7002 switch mainframes. Switches can be used in combination with Model 7090 1 x 4 and 1 x 8 optical versions, plus DC and RF switching cards, for hybrid test configurations.

Keithley Reduces Test Costs With New Optical Switch Card

CLEVELAND-March 19, 2002-Keithley Instruments, Inc. (NYSE:KEI) today announced the availability of new 1x16 optical switches, an expansion of its Model 7090 Optical Switching Card line. The 1x16 switches allow the company's Model 7001 and 7002 switch mainframes to control more optical signals in a single instrument than ever before. These switches are typically used to route a single signal to 16 DUTs or 16 instruments. The new switches can also be used in combination with the Model 7090 1x4 and 1x8 optical versions, plus DC and RF switching cards, for highly versatile hybrid test configurations. True optical switching on the Model 7090 cards allows manufacturers of laser diodes and fiberoptic communication devices to automate test applications more effectively, resulting in faster testing, better repeatability, less personal involvement, improved ROI, and lower cost of ownership for existing test instruments. These
benefits, particularly repeatability and minimizing testing time, are crucial in optoelectronics production test environments.

Applications and Markets. Optical switches are used for automated testing of optoelectronic devices that are essential to the construction of fiberoptic networks in telecommunications and related applications, such as tunable laser diodes, transceiver laser diodes, pump laser diodes, and VCSEL arrays.

Application Background. Optical switching allows the integration of optical measurement processes with electrical testing, and allows such testing to be automated more completely and consistently with a minimum of operator involvement. The ability to switch light signals between multiple input and output channels is increasingly vital as manufacturers strive to make optical device production testing more efficient.

Switching Capabilities. The Model 7090 1x16 Cards switch optical signals in the 1290 to 1650nm range and use single mode fibers with FC/SPC and FC/APC connectors. All Model 7090 cards are compatible with Keithley's GPIB-programmable Model 7001 and 7002 switch mainframes. The Model 7002 mainframe can hold up to ten separate switching cards. DC and RF switching cards are already used in these mainframes to create complex switching solutions.
Furthermore, these mainframes offer other Keithley features, such as the Trigger Link high speed trigger bus, for creating larger test systems with simpler integration and faster synchronization than other types of switching systems.

Price and Availability: The Model 7090 1x16 Optical Switching Card has a list price of $12,995 and is available with six weeks lead time.
