New High Power Optical Pulse Generator



San Rafael, CA; February 15, 2007 - Berkeley Nucleonics Corporation (BNC) is announcing the first optical pulse generator to provide 100mW pulses through a single-mode fiber. High power optical pulse sources with adjustable rates, widths, and power levels speeds the testing of optical receiver and rangefinder systems.

These diode-based, fiber-delivery light sources provide light that is insensitive to vibrations and harsh environments. To provide comparable light levels in the past, multi-mode fiber was used. Unlike a multi-mode fiber configuration in which vibration and fiber placement can affect power levels, the Model 155H-4 uses a more stable single-mode fiber.

BNC's 155H-4 provides 100mW of peak power at 1550 nm. If requested, wavelengths from 1540 nm to 1580 nm can be selected by the factory. The 155H-4 allows external triggering of the light source to follow a user-generated event, or the instrument can self trigger. Delays (range) may be dialed in 1 ns steps making an external delay (range) generator unnecessary.

The 155H-4 can be modulated to create pulses with repeatable and identifiable patterns on the pulse top. Target identification may be an application. Since the light source is triggerable and drivable, a pattern of multiple pulses, irregularly-spaced, can be created on the same output. Multiple target simulation may be an application.
