Metrobility Unveils RA21 ONU; First in New Series of Ethernet in the First Mile Products

Industry's First Comprehensive "OAM Feature Ready" Products Meet IEEE Recommendations for Ethernet in the First Mile Features

Merrimack, NH-May 19, 2003-Metrobility Optical Systems today introduced the RA21 Optical Network Unit, the first in a series of new Ethernet in the First Mile products that enable highly reliable optical Ethernet services to business and residential users through a point-to-point fiber-based network infrastructure.

Metrobility is offering its RA21 ONU and new line of Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) solutions as an extension of its popular Radiance Optical Ethernet System, which enables service providers to create a simple, reliable and scalable Ethernet WAN solution that dramatically reduces their cost of delivering metro access services. The RA21 ONU is Metrobility's first "EFM OAM Feature Ready" standalone product to provide a comprehensive set of operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) features that address the pending feature recommendations outlined in the IEEE 802.3ah standard, a draft Ethernet standard encompassing the technical elements necessary for broadband Ethernet.

"Expenditure constraints, low cost of ownership demands and new standards are driving equipment decisions in the first mile. With the RA21, Metrobility has created a solution that makes Ethernet in the First Mile simple, manageable and affordable, providing a strong value proposition for service providers looking to roll out new Ethernet services to customers," said Michael Kennedy, co-founder and president of Network Strategy Partners. "Metrobility is well-positioned in the access space with its new line of EFM OAM Feature Ready products, which provide immediate benefit to service providers by enabling the easy implementation of new standards for operations, administration and management."

Metrobility's RA21 ONU is a customer premise optical network unit that bridges the gap between the service provider's point-to-point fiber and the customer's copper-based networks. It provides a 100Mbps fiber connection from the service provider's network to a 10/100Mbps auto-negotiating connection to the enterprise network. The solution reduces the costs associated with activating optical services by minimizing the need for new equipment purchases; ensures greater customer satisfaction by ensuring the management and reliability of network traffic; and lowers the cost of ownership by providing service providers the ability to cost effectively troubleshoot remote optical Ethernet links.

The RA21 ONU is managed from the central office through the Metrobility's NetBeacon Element Manager to meet OAM requirements for remote failure indication (including Dying Gasp), remote loopback and link monitoring.

"This product introduction is part a broader strategy to enable Ethernet to be a true wide area networking solution," said Alex Saunders, president and CEO of Metrobility. "The RA21 provides a critical demarcation point between the service provider and customer premise network to reduce service deployment costs, eliminate costly troubleshooting trips, reduce bandwidth costs and implement SNMP network management, meeting the immediate requirement for service providers to implement this functionality within their networks. In addition, we view the RA21 as highly complementary with existing switch technologies, and a key element of our go-to-market strategy is to partner with switch vendors to provide the first complete, end-to-end solutions for Ethernet in the First Mile services."

Metrobility's Radiance Optical System has been adopted in networks around the world and is the product of choice for network builders who need to maximize network uptime and ensure network availability. Key features of the Radiance technology include:

o Receive Path Failure notification

o Remote loopback testing

o Monitoring and historical tracking of line quality through RMON

Group1 statistics

o Alarm notification and historical tracking of

- Equipment monitoring of voltage and temperature

- Optical power

- Bandwidth usage

RA21 Product Details, Availability and Pricing
