Optical Module Finds Micron Sized Surface Defects

SAN DIEGO, CA-November 1, 2004-Not all surface inspection challenges are alike. Some applications demand extremely exacting quality control standards and very reliable detection/classification of defects as small as a few microns in size. This type of defect requires systems with ultra-high resolution and especially sensitive detection capability. To satisfy this need, Wintriss Engineering has created the new Micro Ranger surface defect detection system.

The Micro Ranger(TM) is an optical module with an integrated line scan camera and LED light source that is designed to detect extremely small surface defects. The camera and light are mounted coaxially in an enclosure that maintains precise alignment between all active components. The module uses patented lighting techniques that reliably highlight very small defects and are especially effective in finding three-dimensional flaws and subtle variations in surface texture.

The Micro Ranger(TM) module is fully compatible with Wintriss Engineering Web Ranger(TM) surface inspection systems. The Web Ranger(TM) system provides a full range of surface inspection capabilities including advanced defect classification. Multiple Micro Ranger(TM) modules can be connected together in a network to inspect continuous manufacturing processes of any web width.

Founded in 1989, Wintriss Engineering manufactures the Web Ranger(TM) surface inspection system, the LED Ranger(TM) line of high intensity linear lights and the Opsis 5150(TM) smart line-scan camera used by OEMs, system integrators and end users for motion analysis and machine vision. Patented image processing software, smart digital cameras and lighting solutions make for very cost effective machine vision systems.
