New RESM Angle Encoders Apply Intelligent Signal Processing to Deliver High Accuracy at High Speeds in Rugged Conditions
First in new Signum(TM) line of intelligent encoders for optimum performance in demanding conditions, RESM features ultra-low cyclic error and bi-directional optical reference mark
December 2004 - Renishaw's new Signum(TM) encoder range offers high-speed, reliable, non-contact performance combined with advanced features, including intelligent signal processing and IN-TRAC(TM) auto-phase bi-directional optical reference mark. The RESM optical angle encoder, first Signum offering, delivers speeds to over 3,600 rev/min. Accuracy to ± 0.5 arc second with resolution and repeatability to 0.02 arc second satisfy the most demanding precision applications. Signum(TM) intelligent signal processing ensures excellent reliability and ultra-low cyclic error (± 40 nm), while comprehensive Signum(TM) software enables optimum set-up and real-time system diagnostics via a PC's USB port. The IN-TRAC(TM) optical reference mark, embedded in the scale track, is repeatable in both directions at operational speeds over 3,600 rev/min (Ø52 mm).
The robust stainless steel RESM ring, with integral 20 mm scale marked directly on the periphery, stands up to demanding industrial applications. Rated for temperatures up to 85°C, the RESM comprises the low-profile ring, SR readhead and Si interface. Low-mass, low-inertia design (10 mm x 10 mm ring cross section) enables high dynamic performance without compromising system performance. The low profile ring is available in a wide range of sizes (Ø52 mm to Ø413 mm) and line counts. The high-reliability design complements the robust stainless steel rings with unique filtering optics, standard on all Renishaw encoders, which provide excellent immunity to dirt, dust and scratches.
RESM ring encoders are particularly suited to direct drive rotary (DDR) motors and their large diameter, frameless format. The RESM ring locks directly to the machine shaft, ensuring a compact drive configuration while eliminating coupling losses, oscillation, shaft torsion and other hysteresis errors that can occur with sealed encoders. Direct mounting provides a perfectly matched rotary motion system, eliminating position error, backlash, and audible noise, while saving on space and mechanical complexity.
The RESM encoders bring advanced performance capabilities and application versatility to a wide range of angular position feedback requirements across industry. Low-profile rings offer a compact, easy-to-install format. Unique taper-mount design optimizes installation ease and accuracy adjustment. The taper mechanism corrects for eccentricity of the mounting shaft, while providing excellent stability against shock and vibration. Easy screw adjustments reduce run-out to ±3µm, optimizing control over form error. Large internal diameter simplifies the routing of cables and other supplies through the machine. The Si interfaces can be mounted remotely and a small rugged connector on the readhead cable allows easy feed-through where access is restricted.
