OPTEK Develops A New Family of Optical Isolators for Industrial, Medical and Office Equipment

Data transfer devices provide high voltage isolation, high noise immunity...

ANAHEIM, CA (February 26, 2007) - Providing design engineers with a number of devices suitable for dust-contaminated environments, TT electronics OPTEK Technology has developed a family of optical isolators. Designated the OPI1270, OPI1280 and OPI1290 Series, the isolators, consisting of a visible red LED with phototransistor or Photologic® sensor, transfer data through a plastic flexible cable.

"These isolators were designed for applications that require high voltage isolation between input and output, as well as signal communication over short distances," said Alan Bennett, vice president of sales and marketing for OPTEK Technology. "With high noise immunity and a heavy duty opaque housing to shield the optical signal from dust, the isolators are ideal for industrial, medical and office equipment."

Able to mount each end of the isolator at different locations in the system, the unique design of the OPI1270, OPI1280 and OPI1290 optical isolators maintains excellent data transmission characteristics while being available in a variety of custom lengths.

The OPI1270 and OPI1280 Series isolators feature a visible red LED and a phototransistor sensor, while the OPI1290 Series isolator features a visible red LED and a Photologic® totem-pole output sensor. In all three devices, the LED and sensor are housed in separate opaque molded plastic housings and coupled by a plastic flexible cable.

The isolators feature an isolation voltage of more than 20kV with 0.05" (1.27mm) lead spacing. Power dissipation rating is 100mW, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +100°C. OPTEK will also produce devices to meet customer requirements. Custom electrical specifications, wire and cabling, and connectors are also available.
Typical pricing for the fiber optic isolator family devices starts at $3.45 each in quantities of 1,000 pieces. Production quantity lead times, if stock is not available, are from 6 to 8 weeks.
