Original Press Release:

Small, Compact Operator Panels with Pixel Graphics

Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) is expanding its 70 Series at the entry level with three new operator panels: Simatic OP 73, OP 73micro and OP 77A. The new panels in compact design are equipped with a monochrome, pixel graphics 3- or 4.5-inch graphics display. With a resolution of 160 x 48 pixels or 160 x 64 pixels, processes can be displayed in very user-friendly ways, for instance with bitmaps, bar graphs, graphically labeled softkey buttons, even with Asian characters. Different text sizes are selectable to make the display easy to read
even from a distance. Many different functions are already integrated in the new devices for smaller control or monitoring tasks. The OP 73micro is specifically designed for the Simatic S7-200 mini PLC.

The Simatic OP 73 and OP 77A are equipped with an onboard Profibus DP interface capable of communicating, for instance, at a data rate of 1.5 Mbits/second with a Simatic S7 controller. The OP 73micro communicates via a PPI or MPI point-to-point connection with a Simatic S7-200 mini PLC.

The alarm system includes the message history and freely definable message classes - for instance for operator or fault messages. Other features include language-specific texts and graphics, limit value monitoring and a comprehensive graphics library with pre-configured display graphics to support fast image generation. Projects can be designed to accommodate up to 32 languages for worldwide use - including with Cyrillic and Asian characters. Five languages are available at the push of a button, and the operator can toggle between them online.

Configuring is done with the new Simatic WinCC flexible engineering software -- for the OP 73micro in the version Micro or higher, and for the OP 73 and OP 77A in the version Compact or higher. Projects in OP3 devices can also be simply converted to OP 73 projects, or from OP7 devices to OP 77A projects.

In addition to the new products, the line already includes the Simatic OP 77B operator panel, a device with a 4.5-inch graphics display and a resolution of 160 x 64 pixels.
