Innovative Program Identifies Cost Savings Without Job Cuts

NORTHBROOK, Ill. -- Business Engineering, a leading management consulting organization for manufacturers and distributors, has developed and launched its Readiness Roadmap(SM) -- an assessment program with highly developed analytics that can identify areas of substantial cost savings without major job reductions.

"We are trying to save jobs by looking in other areas of operations to reduce costs," said Doug Willmot, Business Engineering senior consultant. "We employ a very structured and analytical approach to identify areas that will generate cash flow without affecting future growth potential."

Willmot said Readiness Roadmap was created while Business Engineering was conducting a study for an $80 million manufacturing firm. "We actually found additional opportunities outside the scope of work they had asked us to perform," Willmot said, "and that's what led to the creation of the Roadmap."

The operations analysis uncovered major savings opportunities, such as: consolidation of facilities, energy consumption, reconfiguring the shift patterns, a more robust quality system and employee benefit cost.

The result: the program that generated the Roadmap identified over $2 million in one-time savings and $2 million in annualized savings. It also pinpointed substantial savings for a $5 million manufacturer through an inventory reduction plan while improving the material process flow and reducing leased space costs.

"This is how we assist companies with getting additional cash without harming future opportunities for growth, and that means retaining the workforce," Willmot said.

Most manufacturing and distribution businesses are continuing to look for ways to reduce costs in response to a decrease in revenues over the last two years. The Readiness Roadmap is designed to discover opportunities to overcome liquidity issues while avoiding major personnel cutbacks that could impair a company's ability to take advantage of opportunities as the economy recovers. Its analytics focus on all expenditure vs. revenue issues such as gross margins and material costs as a percentage of sales.

"There's no guesswork with the Roadmap," Willmot said. "Everything is based on hard data."

Willmot said an assessment can take from one to four weeks to conduct depending on the company's needs. The Roadmap quantifies benefits and costs for each item and establishes priorities based on improvement of cash flow. "The idea is to ensure savings and cash flow without depleting those human resources that will be necessary in the long run," Willmot said.

Since 1979, Business Engineering has helped small- to large-cap manufacturers and distributors reduce their costs through expert industrial engineering. Its consultants are specialists in such areas as process improvement, inventory and supply chain management, lean manufacturing, physical distribution, facility planning and logistics.
