TI Introduces Lowest Distortion, 16-bit Operational Amplifier

Fully-Differential ADC Driver with Rail-to-Rail Output Simplifies Signal Chain Design

DALLAS (Oct. 31, 2006) - Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) introduced today an expansion of its high-performance family of fully-differential amplifiers that drive high-speed and high-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADC). Designed for high accuracy 3.3-V to 5-V data acquisition systems, the new wideband device offers rail-to-rail output and provides both low noise and the lowest distortion for demanding applications such as wireless communication, test and measurement and medical imaging. (See www.ti.com/sc06186.)

The THS4520 can support wideband, DC coupled, channel requirements in high-accuracy data acquisition systems through its independent output common-mode control. This feature provides an easy control for the output common mode over a wide range, independently from the signal path design.

The new amplifier also offers very low noise at 2 nV/√Hz and the lowest harmonic distortion available at -115 dBc HD2 and -123 dBc HD3 at 8-Vpp output through 100 kHz. High-precision ADCs, such as TI's 16-bit, 4-MSPS ADS8422, will benefit from this extremely low distortion as it provides considerable performance margin to the ADC. High-speed data converters, such as TI's dual 12-bit, 65MSPS ADS5232, will also benefit from the low noise, 3.3-V operation and extremely high 600-MHz bandwidth of the THS4520.

"In addition to driving high-speed 12-bit ADCs, the THS4520 provides excellent linearity at frequencies lower than 1 MHz, making it an ideal interface to high-precision 16-bit ADCs," said Michael Steffes, market development manager for TI's high-speed signal conditioning products. "The addition of the THS4520 broadens our extensive portfolio of signal chain solutions and enables customers to hit new levels of performance in their systems."

The THS4520 is characterized for operation over the full industrial temperature range from -40C to +85C and is pin-compatible with TI's high-speed family of fully-differential amplifiers (THS4508, THS4509, THS4511 and THS4513).

Availability, Pricing and Support

The THS4520 is available now from TI and its authorized distributors in a 16-pin quad flat no-lead (QFN) package. Suggested resale pricing in quantities of 1,000 is $2.25.

Evaluation modules (EVMs) and SPICE models are also available. In addition, TI offers analog engineers a wide-ranging support infrastructure that includes training and seminars, design tools and utilities, technical documentation, an online KnowledgeBase, a product information hotline and a comprehensive offering of samples that ship within 24 hours of request.
