Original Press Release:

The Commander SK Redefining Value in General Purpose Motor Controls

The Commander SK from Control Techniques establishes a new benchmark in simple general purpose drives, providing a level of performance and flexibility not found in any other low-cost, open loop AC drive. It's the first economical drive that a user can "stick" PLC functionality into, to save both space and cost on systems. Snap in Solution Modules allow for interchangeable fieldbus communications and other functionality. Drives have a built-in EMC filter, further simplifying installations.

The Commander SK is easy to setup and use. Though simple to operate, it has the performance characteristics to allow it to solve applications normally requiring more complex and expensive drives. Its 1,500 Hz output frequency makes it robust enough for industrial applications demanding high cycle rates and tight speed control, such as indexers and fuel pumps. Its superior shaft performance makes it incredibly responsive to either demand or load changes. Its ability to hold torque down to 1 Hz makes it ideal for material handling applications. Its selectable switching frequencies to 18 kHz allow for quiet motor operation in applications where sound must be kept at a minimum.

The Commander SK optimizes energy savings with dynamic V/f control for single motor applications, and Square Law V/f control for multiple motor applications. Its features like mains dip ridethrough to mitigate nuisance trips and the ability to set skip frequencies to minimize mechanical resonance makes the drive an excellent choice for HVAC applications where reliability and maintaining comfort are critical.

Simple, but Flexible
Embedded support for an extensive list of low cost options enables OEM's and end users to conveniently tailor the Commander SK to specific application needs. These include enabling PLC functionality with the "LogicStick" and Solution Modules for easily adding I/O options or to support popular fieldbus options - Ethernet, DeviceNet, Profibus-DP, CANopen, and Interbus-S. Modbus RTU is standard. Other options include parameter cloning with the SmartStick, Remote Keypad, and Timer I/O, which in addition to providing extended I/O, utilizes a real-time clock for scheduling drive operation.

The optional LogicStick enables the PLC, and provides memory for customer specific programs holding approximately 30 to 50 rungs of ladder logic and function blocks. Programming is accomplished with IEC 1131-3-compliant SyPT Lite software. Go to www.syptlite.com for more information SyPTLite, and to download this free, easy-to-use software.

The ability to "stick" PLC functionality into the Commander SK sets it apart from other drives in its price range. This feature delivers real value and cost savings by replacing, relay logic components, and nano and micro PLCs, which are sometimes added to small systems for interface or additional process control. In many cases the I/O between the PLC and the drive can be eliminated by wiring the I/O from the process (or machine) directly into the drive, letting the Commander SK's PLC logic and functions, such as math and PID blocks, control the process. The PLC is also ideal for quickly adding that one extra function that a standard configuration does not allow, for example having one input perform multiple functions, or provide the option to select a recipe of speeds, ramps, torques and motor parameters.

Other cost saving features of the Commander SK include its built-in EMC filter, and the ability of the IP-20 drive to be quickly converted to a NEMA 1 drive with the addition of an optional cover. For conduit installations, an easily attached heavy-duty metal gland plate is available.

The Commander SK is easy to install and setup. Size A and B can be din-rail mounted, while all can be surface mounted, keyhole mounted from the top, or "open" foot mounted. Terminals are clearly marked and easily accessed. The simple push-buttons can setup all the necessry parameters, with the 10 most-used parameters listed on the front of the drive. The drive also can be setup with a computer via RJ45 serial communications connector.

Users can select from nine pre-figured I/O modes, and can choose the type of control desired - independent PID, motorized pot, fan and pump control, voltage or current input each with three preset speeds, speed control with 4 preset speeds, keypad control, or torque control.
