One of Virginia's Largest Wastewater Treatment Facilities Installs an Easi-Span Building From Smith-Midland

Precast concrete provided the most durable, cost-effective solution.

Midland, Va. – Recently, MEB General Contractors engaged Smith-Midland to install the tallest Easi-Span® precast concrete building the company has ever produced. This structure was commissioned for the Proctors Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, one of the largest facilities in Virginia, handling 27 million gallons of wastewater per day before it is returned to the James River.

Other building materials don't have the longevity necessary to safely and efficiently house the chemicals within the facility. According to Terry Utterback, lead sales representative on the project, "Precast concrete is the proven choice for wastewater treatment facilities. Due to the nature of the materials they use, other building materials such as steel would corrode and need to be replaced more often. We provide a maintenance free solution that is long lasting and a building that fits in with the established aesthetic."

The particular height requirements of this project were easily achieved by use of the pre-engineered Easi-Span Building. "Normally we cast 12' high panels and if the client wants a taller structure they will pre-pour a knee wall," said Sequoia Britton, Smith-Midland building installation manager. "However, this client wanted the exterior to be cohesive so we cast the walls to the final 21' height as required by the plans."

A normal 1200 sq. ft. building (30x40), would take several weeks to construct. This project was completed over the course of 3.5 days. "Even with the additional rigging required to erect the panels we were able to deliver the building on Thursday and have it fully assembled with a post tensioned Easi-Span clear span roof by mid-day on Sunday," said Britton.

Using the Easi-Span roof system was an essential component of the build. "The building will house several very tall chemical storage tanks. Because the roof is post-tensioned the load is safely carried by the exterior walls. Using the Easi-Span roof allowed this customer to have the wide open floor they needed," remarked Britton. The Easi-Span roof system is a proprietary product and is offered as a component of Easi-Set Building products licensed through Easi-Set Worldwide.
