On-Board Transceiver delivers 25 Gbps per channel.

Press Release Summary:

Featuring 12 transmit and 12 receive channels, On-board Optical Transceiver minimizes amount of PCB real estate required. Connectivity to-and-from transceiver is realized by high-density front panel optical cabling system that features SFF optical adapters and multi-fiber cable assemblies, which can deliver port-to-port density of 12.5 mm and 12–48 optical fibers per port. Pluggable optical interface and lens-based coupling element facilitate mating and removal of optical cables.

Original Press Release:

FCI Develops 12-channel On-Board Transceivers that Deliver 25Gb/s Per Channel while Reducing Required PCB Real Estate

SINGAPORE  — FCI, a leading manufacturer of high speed I/O optical and copper interconnect systems, has developed a 12-channel On-board Optical Transceiver (OBT) capable of transmitting signals at 25Gb/s per channel. The single transceiver unit has 12-transmit and 12-receive channels and is designed to minimize the amount of PCB real estate required, while taking into account ease of application and removal or repair.

Significantly minimizing signal loss, connectivity to-and-from the On-board Optical Transceiver is realized by a high-density front panel optical cabling system that features small form factor optical adaptors and multi-fiber cable assemblies, which can deliver port-to-port density of 12.5mm and 12- to 48-optical fibers per port.

The On-board Optical Transceiver unit features a new pluggable optical interface and lens-based coupling element that enables easy mating and removal of optical cables. The on-board optical transceiver is connected to the PCB via the pluggable optical interface, which also allows quick and straightforward assembly and removal when required.

“FCI’s new On-board Transceiver design addresses a number of emerging industry trends and hardware designer needs,” stated Sven Otte, engineering manager / director of FCI’s optical products. “These trends and needs, such as minimized PCB real estate use, removal of high speed signals from the backplane to minimize signal loss, the need for channels to have 25Gb/s+ capabilities per channel, and ease of application, use, and replacement, are all addressed in our OBT package”

The on-board transceiver  was recently demonstrated at OFC / NFOEC, illustrating its 12-channel capability. The OBT can also be configured for lower bandwidth applications where, for example, 4-channels running at 25Gb/s per channel may be the preferred configuration. Other custom configurations are also possible depending upon customer needs and requirements.
