OMS Group Supplies Continuous Panel Line to New Bayer Pilot Plant

LATROBE, PA. - Bayer Materials Science, the world's largest raw materials and polyurethane systems supplier, has selected OMS Group to supply a new, continuous-panel "pilot plant" for installation in Bayer's prestigious Research and Development Facility in Leverkusen, Germany.

The pilot plant will be more than 229 feet long and capable of processing formulations for both profiled metal and flexible substrate panels. The line will include flexible paper decoilers, a roll-forming machine for profiled metal product, a multi-component metering group, double-belt conveyor, cross-cut saw, a panel cooling line and an automatic stacking line.

"This decision by Bayer Material Science in favor of OMS Group is a validation of all the efforts the Group has made over the past 10 years to be at the leading edge of continuous plant technology," said OMS Group Commercial Director Eraldo Greco.

The new contract was awarded against stiff competition from the industry's major suppliers and reinforces Milan-based OMS Group's position as a leading world-wide supplier of plant and machinery for the continuous panel market.

"Over the past few years we have supplied complete turnkey plants to the principal industry players world-wide and we have developed many innovative, dedicated technical solutions to Greco said. "It now seems our efforts in the fields of high-speed, flexible-faced and conventional metal, wood and gypsum faced composite panels has been recognized by the world leader in the polyurethanes supply industry."

Same system available to North American panel manufacturers

The same types of OMS equipment that will be used in Bayer's German pilot plant are available to North American manufacturers, said Mark Clark, general manager of Polyurethane Process Industries. PPI is the exclusive distributor of OMS Group equipment in the United States.

"We've helped OMS install several successful continuous insulating panel plants in the United States," Clark said.

OMS Automation engineers consider all ergonomic, functional and energy-related aspects of the panel production line during the creation of a fully integrated system. They study the production requirements and supply solutions for all types of panel processes and substrates, including paper- or metal-faced panels, PIR or PUR types of polyurethane foam, phenolic foam or rockwool bonded with polyurethane adhesive, Clark said.
