Original Press Release:

Norwood / Allen Introduces MPS Integrated Offline Label Printing Systems

Norwood Marking Systems / Allen Coding Systems introduces the new MPS family of offline reel-to-reel label printing systems at Pack Expo booth #2000. The MPS, which combines a Norwood / Allen printer with integration from Code-in-Motion, prints serialized, variable and/or batch data to pre-printed or blank labels. With its optional vision inspection and traceability software, MPS complies with track-and-trace and electronic pedigree serialization initiatives to improve inventory management and assure consumer safety.

Norwood's MPS is ideal for customers labeling regulated and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics and food products.

The table-top model is a stand-alone unit that automatically unwinds, indexes, prints and rewinds a roll of label media for offline printing. Customers then use this printed roll of label media on their label application systems. If needed, the offline reel-to-reel MPS can be upgraded at a later date in the field to print online.

The versatile MPS integrates either a continuous motion or intermittent motion thermal transfer printer or hot stamp printer, depending on the needs of the application, with controlled data processing. The optional cimVIEW label inspection system features a smart Cognex Insight camera that is integrated with the printer via an Allen-Bradley PLC.

When equipped with optional vision inspection, the MPS can perform OCR/OCV (optical character recognition and verification) to confirm that each character is correct and not smudged, distorted or broken. The system also verifies that barcodes, pharma codes, 2D matrix codes and other graphics such as logos are correct. An optional reject or defacing system can be integrated to handle out-of-tolerance labels.

The MPS can feature one of several thermal transfer or hot stamp printers from Norwood / Allen including the NGT 2, NGT 4, 53LT, 55sst and Allen hot stamp printers. The MPS on exhibit at Pack Expo will feature the high resolution NGT 4 thermal transfer printer, which achieves a print area of up to 4.2 inches (107 mm) wide at speeds of up to hundreds of labels/cycles per minute. The MPS can be customized with the NGT 6 or NGT 8 thermal transfer printer if larger print areas are needed.

With its integrated Ethernet card, the MPS can be accessed via a plant-wide network to enable remote operation, monitoring and diagnostics. The system can also be equipped with an optional touchscreen user interface that enables operators to recall print jobs from memory and handle simple editing functions at print time.

The MPS is designed and manufactured to comply with GAMP 5 guidelines and can be equipped to meet FDA 21 CFR Part 11 requirements. It is designed for years of reliable performance with robust mechanics and superior components that are commercially available off-the-shelf.
